Now that the Olympics and all three Grand Tours are out of the way, as the Vuelta a Espana finished up earlier this month, professional cycling turns its attention towards one of the biggest moments of the year – the 2024 UCI Road World Championships.

Live from Zurich, Switzerland, this prestigious cycling event runs from September 21 to 29. However, this preview will focus on just the Men’s Elite Individual Time Trial that takes place on Sunday, September 22. We’ll have a Men’s Road Course preview prior to that race as well.

The Men’s Elite ITT spans across a 46.1 km course. There’s 413m of climbing on the day and then a flat 15km stretch to finish off the route.

Remco Evenepoel enters this event as the odds-on favorite, and rightfully so. We’ll get into his credentials below. He’s joined by other well-known time trialists in Joshua Tarling, Filippo Ganna, Stegan Kung and Primoz Roglic.

Men’s Elite ITT Favorites

The following cyclists are considered the odds-on favorites to win the Men’s Elite Individual Time Trial:

Remco Evenepoel (-225)

Other than Tadej Pogacar, who won the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France this year, nobody has been more successful in 2024 than Remco Evenepoel.

His season really kicked off with a 2^nd at Paris-Nice in March. A crash at the Tour of Basque Country derailed his spring plans, but Evenepoel returned at the Criterium du Dauphine to work on his form and prepare for the Tour de France.

The highlight of his Dauphine appearance was winning the Stage 4 ITT. Following a concerning effort for the Dauphine, Remco stunned his critics by finishing third at the 2024 Tour de France.

He won the White Jersey competition, for the best young rider, won the first ITT on Stage 7 and finished 3^rd in the second ITT on Stage 21. Granted, he had already locked in his third-place spot and I don’t think he went full gas on this final ITT.

Following the TDF, Evenepoel crushed the field by winning Paris Olympic gold in the Men’s Individual Time Trial and the Men’s Road Race, making history in the process.

Now, he turns his attention towards winning the World’s Men’s Elite ITT for a second straight year. Additionally, Remco won the Worlds’ Men’s Elite Road Race in 2022 as well.

Joshua Tarling (+300)

The 20-year-old cyclist has quickly become one of the top time trialists in the sport today. Ironically, he’s also on the same team (Ineos Grenadiers) as Filippo Ganna, who’s also one of the favorites this weekend.

Tarling has had some highs and lows this season to date. He won an ITT in the O Gran Caino in February, was 5^th in the ITT for Paris-Nice in March, was 6^th at Dwars door Vlaanderen, took second in the ITT at the Criterium du Dauphine behind Remco, and won the Great Britain National ITT in June.

Unfortunately, he missed out on an Olympic medal in Paris after finishing 4^th. He also crashed out of the Vuelta a Espana on Stage 9.

With that said, Tarling is a contender this weekend and could outduel Evenepoel if the latter is not in top form. The young Welsh rider finished third in last year’s ITT at the World Championships, just 0.48 seconds behind Evenepoel and 0.36 seconds behind his teammate Ganna.

Filippo Ganna (+650)

Filippo Ganna is a two-time World Champion in the Men’s Elite ITT. He won it in 2020 and 2021. He finished second to Evenepoel last year, narrowly missing out by 0.12 seconds. Ganna was also second to Remco at the Paris Olympic games, as the Italian rider took home the silver medal in the Men’s ITT.

Ganna’s season is dotted with success and he’s hoping to get the better of Evenepoel this weekend. The Italian cyclist has finished in the Top 3 for a half dozen different ITT stages on the season, including a few victories.

He’s a big, strong cyclist with power to sprint and to time trial. Ganna’s experience could give him the advantage over someone like Tarling. It’s going to be intriguing to see whether or not he can finish on the podium.

Stefan Kung (+1600)

Stefan Kung is a well-known time trialist just like Ganna. The 30-year-old has been around for quite some time and has plenty of World’s ITT experience. He finished 10^th in last year’s ITT, which was down from his 2^nd place result in 2022.

On the year, Kung has some strong results including an ITT win in the Vuelta, 5^th at Paris-Roubaix, 3^rd at Dwars door Vlaanderen, and a few Top 5 finishes in other ITT’s throughout the season. He was 8^th in the Olympics ITT and 7^th in the Olympics Road Race.

Kung is always capable of pulling off a very fast time trial. However, I think there are better options this weekend than the native Switzerland rider who will be super motivated to win in his home country.

Best Betting Value for the Men’s Elite ITT

Primoz Roglic (+1800) is coming off a history-making performance at the Vuelta a Espana with his fourth career victory. Roglic is one of the top Grand Tour riders in the sport. However, many people overlook his time trial skills which is a huge mistake. And, it’s one reason why I think he offers tremendous value this weekend.

Roglic ha ganado 17 ITTs en su carrera profesional de ciclismo, pero ninguna más grande que ganar la medalla de oro olímpica para el ITT en 2021.

Si nos enfocamos solo en esta temporada, Roglic ganó el ITT en la Vuelta al País Vasco antes de su caída y lesión. Fue tercero en el ITT del Criterium du Dauphine y tercero en la etapa 7 del ITT en el Tour de Francia antes de caer. Fue 8^o en el primer ITT de la Vuelta y terminó 2^o en el ITT final de la Vuelta.

De cara a los Campeonatos Mundiales, Roglic parece muy tranquilo y confiado:

“No puedo hacer predicciones. Los recorridos – tanto la contrarreloj como la carrera en ruta – me favorecen.”

Con cuotas de +1800, es difícil encontrar un mejor valor en las apuestas para un ciclista tan consumado como Roglic. Si llega en forma óptima, Roglic definitivamente podría terminar en el podio y desafiar por la victoria.    

Mejor Longshot de ITT Elite Masculino

Brandon McNulty (+4000) es mi elección para el mejor longshot para ganar la Contrarreloj Individual Elite Masculina este fin de semana.

En el año, McNulty ya ha ganado cinco ITTs: UAE Tour, París-Niza, Tour de Romandía, Nacionales de EE. UU. y la Vuelta. También terminó 5^o en el ITT de los Juegos Olímpicos en París el mes pasado.

McNulty fue 4^o en el ITT de los Campeonatos Mundiales el año pasado, terminando 1.26 segundos detrás de Evenepoel. Y no podemos olvidar que ganó el ITT de los Mundiales como Junior en 2016.

El estadounidense está en ascenso y desarrollándose en un ciclista completo fantástico. Sin embargo, sus habilidades en contrarreloj realmente están comenzando a ser algo digno de ver. McNulty podría sorprender al campo el domingo.

Predicciones de ITT Elite Masculino en los Campeonatos Mundiales de Ciclismo UCI 2024

Le dije a un amigo mío, un entusiasta del ciclismo en ciernes gracias a mi aliento, que si Evenepoel compite en el ITT de este fin de semana, entonces ganaría. Bueno, el belga de 24 años tomará la línea de salida el domingo, y no tengo dudas de que ganará.

Claro, me encantaría más emoción e intriga, pero también me gusta ver a los mejores del deporte establecer la barra más alta. Ayuda a evolucionar el deporte, crear superestrellas y hace que estos eventos sean aún más notables.

Además, me encantaría ver a uno de mis favoritos, Roglic, lograr la sorpresa. Me encanta su valor para esta carrera. Y también estaré apoyando al estadounidense Brandon McNulty para que al menos logre un lugar en el podio.

Dicho esto, todo se trata de Evenepoel y de lograr una hazaña histórica increíble al ganar tanto los Juegos Olímpicos como los Campeonatos Mundiales de ITT en el mismo año.

Ciclistas como Evenepoel, Ganna y Tarling tienen una mejor oportunidad de terminar en el Top 3 que Roglic. Sin embargo, sus cuotas ofrecen mucho menos valor. Por ejemplo: Evenepoel es -600 y Tarling es -300.

Por eso estoy eligiendo a Roglic con cuotas de +175. Me encanta obtener cuotas positivas en uno de los mejores ciclistas del deporte. Además, es un fuerte contrarrelojista con muchos logros y experiencia. Siempre que esté bien descansado después de la Vuelta, Roglic podría ser un jugador importante en el ITT del domingo.

Mejor Top 10: Tobias Foss (+100)

Me sorprende realmente que Tobias Foss esté listado con cuotas de +100 para terminar en el Top 10 en el ITT del domingo. Sí, terminó 11^o el año pasado en este ITT, pero estamos hablando del Campeón del Mundo de ITT 2022 aquí.

Ahora, no estoy diciendo que va a competir por un lugar en el podio, pero me gusta el dinero par en un ex Campeón del Mundo para al menos conseguir un Top 10. Ha tenido tres finales en el Top 4 en contrarreloj esta temporada, siendo la más reciente hace cuatro semanas en el Renewi Tour donde terminó 4^o.

Ben Healy (+100) vs. Jay Vine (-138)

En esta apuesta prop de ciclismo, debes elegir qué ciclista terminará más alto. Así que, para este ITT Elite Masculino, debes elegir qué ciclista crees que tendrá el tiempo más rápido entre los dos.

Ben Healy llega como el desvalido, con lo que estoy de acuerdo. Ahora, Healy terminó dos lugares más alto que Jay Vine en el ITT Elite Masculino de los Campeonatos Mundiales 2023, pero me gusta más la forma de Vine en este momento del año que la forma de Healy.

Healy tiene una victoria en la temporada, pero fue una etapa en la Vuelta de Eslovenia. La temporada de Vine ha sido mejor, lo cual es mucho decir considerando que tuvo que recuperarse de una brutal caída hace unos meses.

No olvidemos que Vine también ganó el ITT del Campeonato Nacional Australiano el año pasado y ha demostrado ser un ciclista completo fuerte.

Al comparar su temporada 2024 con la de Healy, Vine lo ha superado en ITTs y carreras por etapas en general. Las cuotas de Vine tampoco son terribles considerando su forma en los últimos meses.
