2021 Denver Broncos Team Preview, Odds, and Predictions

The Denver Broncos head into the season feeling much better about their football team. For years, since Peyton Manning left, the Broncos have been in a state of turmoil. They’ve struggled to find a quarterback they can trust. The defense has faltered when they needed it most, and they seemed to have lost hope. However, their 2020 season, although ending in a 5-11 record, showed promise.

2020 was their fourth consecutive losing season, but that was due in part to a couple of factors. First, injuries across the board, the Denver Broncos just couldn’t stay healthy. Second, poor Covid-19 management saw multiple players missing games. Third, terrible playcalling from their offensive coordinator, who was fired at the end of the season. Now that they’ve corrected these things, we should expect much more from the Broncos in 2021.

Although the Broncos should have a better season than their 2020 outing, they aren’t playoff-ready. They have to compete with some great teams in the AFC West that will likely overshadow them. One of these teams, of course, is the Kansas City Chiefs. The other is the Los Angeles Chargers, who have the best odds to take the number two spot.

Clearly, the AFC Championship is out of the question for the Broncos. With the AFC Championship being out of reach, so is the Super Bowl. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t bets to take on the Broncos. The win total at 8.5 means they’d have to win 9 games to take them over, which they’re favored to do.

We, on the other hand, expect them to do the exact opposite and go under the total. A quick look at their schedule in 2021 will let you know everything you need to about why. Read our 2021 AFC West preview.

2021 Denver Broncos Offseason Grade: C+

Key Additions: (QB, Teddy Bridgewater), (C, Brett Jones) and (OLB, Jonathon Cooper)

Key Departures: (CB, A.J. Bouye) and (DT, Jurrell Casey)

Not many notable departures on the side of the Denver Broncos aside from A.J Bouye. It leaves a hole in their secondary, but they still have a couple of strong defensive backs. They’ve held onto Ronald Darby and Kyle Fuller while drafting Patrick Surtain II. This should do well to make their secondary solid, and they’ll need that after surrendering 27.9 ppg in 2020.

One problem we see in terms of departures is Jurrell Casey. Casey was an incredible run-stopper, something you don’t often see in the NFL these days. Considering the running backs in the AFC (i.e., Derrick Henry), you’d likely want a run-stuffer. This could potentially be a big hole in the Broncos’ defense.

As far as additions go, the Broncos did great in the draft, but there’s a bigger story brewing. The question of who the starting quarterback will be is looming large right now. They brought journeyman Teddy Bridgewater over but still have Drew Lock.

Is there some quarterback competition brewing? Or is it a security measure in case of an injury to Lock? Once the season starts, we’ll get a better look at Lock and can determine Bridgewater’s role.

Denver Broncos 2021 Preview

The Broncos are in good shape to have a “brighter” season. They might not be able to get over .500 this season but could claim more wins than last year. The biggest problem is how tough their schedule is. The teams they face from the AFC North and NFC East are tough matchups for them. This is why we say that there’s a bright future for the Broncos, but they’ll have a tough 2021 season.

Denver Broncos Futures Best Bets

Clearly, it’d be a waste of money to bet on the Broncos to win the AFC West. That being said, the Super Bowl and the AFC Championship are out of the question. You should, however, place a wager on their win total being under 8.5 games. They have an incredibly tough schedule this season, and we’d be surprised if they nabbed seven wins.
