The PGA Championship was an amazing event as Justin Thomas came back on the final day for a thrilling victory at Southern Hills. This week Thomas comes in as one of the favorites to win the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. Thomas is at +1200 along with Jordan Speith.
However, they are not the top favorite in the field this weekend as that honor goes to Scottie Scheffler who comes in as the lone favorite at +1000. Scheffler entered last week’s PGA Championship as the favorite as well but failed to make it to weekend play. However, missing the cut gives him two additional days of rest heading into Thursday’s opening round.
The Charles Schwab Challenge (Formerly the Colonial according to older golf fans) is known for tight finishes but it has only had one playoff since 2014. That’s when Daniel Berger beat Collin Morikawa in a playoff for the 2020 traditional Scottish Tartan jacket.
Jason Kokrak was last year’s winner at Colonial and he comes in at +4000. Kokrak was put to the test last year as Speith came close to catching him on Sunday. Korak stayed in front of the field down the stretch and won by two strokes. Speith won this event in 2016 and was T2 in 2017.
Here are the favorites to win the 2022 Charles Schwab Challenge outright:
Scottie Scheffler +1000
Justin Thomas +1200
Jordan Spieth +1200
Collin Morikawa +1600
Will Zalatoris +2000
Viktor Hovland +2000
2022 Charles Schwab Challenge Preview
Where: Forth Worth, Texas
Course: The Colonial Country Club
Format: Stroke Play
Par: 70
Length: 7,209
When: May 26 – May 29, 2022
Purse: $8.5 Million.
TV Coverage: CBS/Golf Channel
The Colonial Country Club will be a change of pace compared to the PGA Championship! The course plays at par 70, and a relatively short 7,209 yards. Before you start thinking this will be a breeze, consider that the John Bredemus and Perry Maxwell design is packed with tight fairways and doglegs. Greens are well protected with multiple bunkers.
Water comes into play on 5 or 6 holes depending on pin placement including No. 18. The finishing hole has an elevated green with the entire left side sloped steeply towards a pond. Two holes, both par 3’s, play completely over water and slope slightly towards the water’s edge.
2022 Charles Schwab Challenge Predictions
Jordan Spieth +1200
Jordan Spieth has won here in the past and has finished runner-up twice. He’s also finished 15th or better eight times at Colonial. He’s only played here ten times so that’s an amazing accomplishment. This is a course he seems to enjoy and has dialed in over the years. Surprisingly, he’s not won this event more than once.
Will Zalatoris +2200
Will Zalatoris has shown he has the mental skills to stay with the leaders. His second-place finish at the 2021 Masters was not a fluke and he was one of the leaders all week at the PGA Championship finishing 2nd in a playoff to Justin Thomas. He’s not won a PGA event in his brief pro career yet but he’s leading stats in scoring for “Approach-to-green” and “Tee-to-green.” He’s probably wanting to put last year’s T59 finish here behind him.
Tommy Fleetwood +3300
This is Tommy Fleetwoods first appearance at the Charles Schwab Championship so there’s not much info to glean from past performances at the Colonial. But he was in the hunt last week at the PGA Championship with improving rounds every day on the course. He finished T5 last week and shot a 67 on Sunday.
Others I Like: You just don’t know if Justin Thomas (+1200) can go back-to-back after such an emotional roller coaster that comes with winning a Major. I’m going to watch Davis Riley (+4000) as the rookie pro has finished T4, 5th, T9, and T13 in his last four starts. He was 2nd at the Texas Open in April.
