The 2022 PGA Tour calendar season officially kicks off this week with a FedEx points-paying event! The Sentry Tournament of Champions is set for the 6th through the 9th of January at its traditional home of the Plantation Course in Hawai. Harris English is the defending tournament Champion and could be the first back-to-back winner since Geoff Ogilvy did it in 2009 and 2010.
Last year English went 25-under and 267 overall while getting a playoff win over Joaquín Niemann. It was the 2nd time in a row that the event had ended in a playoff. Justin Thomas downed Patrick Reed and Xander Schauffele in a playoff during the prior Tournament of Champions.
This event has a select field of players that won tournaments last season. That gives us a total field of only 39 eligible players with little room for error as the cutoff line is 34 players heading into weekend play. The winner will get 500 FedEx points to kick off the new season! Here are the favorites coming in at +1000 and under to win the 2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions outright.
Jon Rahm +800
Justin Thomas +850
Collin Morikawa +1000
2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions Preview
Where: Kapalua, Hawaii
Course: Kapalua Resort, Plantation Course
Par: 73
Length: 7,596
When: January 6-9, 2022
Purse: $8.2 million
TV Coverage: NBC/Golf Channel
The Plantation Course at Kapalua in Hawaii is the only Par 73 on the PGA Tour and it is the only course with 7 holes that are longer than 500 yards. It also has amazing elevation changes, incredible scenic views, and switches from a seaside course to a more traditional set of links between holes.
It has been the host to the Tournament of Champions since 1999. The course also features plenty of room on many of the fairways, manageable landing zones, and player- friendly second and third cuts. The latest improvements came in 2020 where some bunkers were reworked and the greens were switched to TifEagle Bermuda. This is a course where players can show off some skillsets and go wide open on many of their tee-shots.
2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions Predictions
Justin Thomas +850
Justin Thomas is the only player in the field with multiple wins at this course and that’s a plus when you’re playing in a field of guys that all won tournaments last season. He won in 2017 and 2020. He’s also finished in the 3rd spot here twice. Thomas is ranked 6th in the world on the OWGR list and already has a Ryder Cup win this season, a 3rd place finish, a T3, and a T18 finish.
Xander Schauffele +1200
Xander Schauffele won here back in 2019 then almost won again in 2020 but lost in a playoff. Then he finished T5 last year. Schauffele also has the Ryder Cup on his resume and he was T12 at the Hero World Challenge. Schauffele has moved into the 5th spot in the OWGR list. He now has 4 career wins under his belt.
Patrick Cantlay +1600
Patrick Cantlay is making his first outing of the new season and he should be well-rested. Cantlay comes in as the 2021 FedExCup champion as well as the Player of the Year. He also finished up with 4 wins on the year. He’s also played well here in the past as he’s carded a T15, a 4th place finish, and a T13 respectively.
Others: You can’t ignore Viktor Hovland (+1200) with his two wins at the end of last year. Also, there is Sungjae Im (+2200) who finished T5 here last year.
