MLB Futures Betting – Among Best Bets, Remember the Mets Are “All In”

The New York Mets had won 66% of their Opening Day games coming into this season.

This year they lost their opener, although technically, was it?

The first three games of their season were postponed when the Washington nationals came up with some positive COVID tests.

No matter. All is good. New owner Steve Cohen is “all in,” as he says, having recently signed shortstop Francisco Lindor, considered something of a superstar, to a ten-year, $341 million contract extension.

And he has made it relatively clear that he isn’t going to accept less than a playoff berth for his new “asset.”

The Mets, who are priced at +900 to win the World Series, according to America’s Bookie, weren’t looking to leave a lot of stones unturned in the off-season, but they swung and missed when it came to the big-money free agents like George Springer, JT Realmuto and Trevor Bauer. The trade with Cleveland, which brought over Lindor, made up for that, to some extent. And as far as Bauer is concerned, well, how do you overpay for a guy who was a Cy Young winner in a shortened season, when you know you have to come up with an offer that will keep Jacob deGrom, a two-time Cy Young winner who is superior, but who is under club control only through 2022?

It’s true that Bauer would have been in great aid to this starting rotation. beyond deGrom, nothing is all that certain. Marcus Stroman, who opted out of the 2020 season, had a very encouraging start, giving up three hits and a run in six innings, so we’ll follow what he’s doing. But they are looking for some production out of the likes of Tajuan Walker, David Peterson and Joey Lucchesi, and that might not be such an easy proposition. Well, in the early going, anyway. Carlos Carrasco (part of the Lindor trade) is working his way back from a torn hamstring, and Noah Syndergaard, who is coming off Tommy John surgery, is expected back around June.

The bullpen is, for the time being, missing Dellin Betances and Seth Lugo, both of whom are on the injured list, but this is going to wind up a strength, particularly if Edwin Diaz, who had a 1.75 ERA and struck out almost two batters per inning last year, can come close to that kind of form.

No one should worry all that much about the ability of the Mets (who are +550 to win the National league pennant) to score runs. They’ll produce one way or another. Aside from Lindor, who has hit more than 30 homers in each of his last three full seasons, there is Pete Alonso (famous for his 53 homers as a rookie); Jeff McNeil, a .316 career hitter, Michael Conforto, who hit .322 last season, and Dominic Smith, long considered a power prospect, who hit .316 with ten homers and 42 RBI last season. Catcher James McCann, who once made the American League All-Star team with the White Sox, was signed in the off-season.

Of course, sometimes when you have a dangerous lineup on offense it can create a lot of danger to itself on defense, and that is what the Mets may have to sweat through as this season progresses.
