“There was new energy out there,” said Kevin Porter Jr., who added 21 points. “(Portis) gave us life. He got us together and told us this was playoff basketball. We responded.”
Portis’ return bolsters a roster already energized by Giannis Antetokounmpo, who notched his third straight triple-double with 23 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists. Milwaukee (45-34) can clinch the fifth seed with a win over New Orleans and a Pistons loss to New York.
Pelicans Limp Toward Season’s End
The Pelicans (21-58) are finishing out a lost season and will wrap up their road slate Thursday night in Milwaukee. New Orleans has dropped four straight and is just 7-33 on the road after a 119-114 loss to Brooklyn on Tuesday.
Head coach Willie Green is focused on development amid adversity, as eight of the team’s top nine scorers remain sidelined.
“The end of the game group was good all game,” Green said. “They competed and played together. But we need urgency early. That third quarter set us back.”
New Orleans was outscored 43-26 in the third frame by Brooklyn, digging a hole too deep to escape. Despite a late push, the Pelicans fell short once again.
The team will close out its season with two home games—against Miami and Oklahoma City. With only 21 wins, this year marks one of the worst seasons in franchise history.
