Lynx thriving behind Shepard’s historic night

The Minnesota Lynx will try to complete a two-game sweep of the Indiana Fever when the teams meet Sunday in Minneapolis.

Minnesota (29-7) opened the series with a 95-90 road win on Friday, powered by Jessica Shepard’s historic performance. Shepard recorded the second triple-double in franchise history and the fastest in WNBA history, finishing with 22 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists.

“If Jessica is not a Lynx this year, we’d be in trouble,” head coach Cheryl Reeve said, underscoring Shepard’s importance as Minnesota pushes for the league’s best record.

The Lynx have thrived even without star forward Napheesa Collier, who has missed seven games with a sprained ankle. Shepard’s emergence, along with consistent contributions from Kayla McBride, Courtney Williams, and Alanna Smith, has kept Minnesota rolling.

Fever battling injuries and inconsistency

The Fever (19-17) have been without Caitlin Clark for 14 games due to groin and ankle injuries, a blow that has left them searching for scoring balance. Kelsey Mitchell has carried much of the offensive load, averaging 20.6 points per game, while Aliyah Boston anchors the interior with 8.3 rebounds per contest.

Indiana’s defensive struggles were evident in Friday’s loss, as Minnesota repeatedly punished turnovers and breakdowns in personnel matchups. Head coach Stephanie White stressed the need for sharper execution.

“You can’t set your defense when turnovers lead to easy scores,” White said. “They make you pay when you make those mistakes.”

In an effort to bolster the roster amid injuries, Indiana signed veteran guard Aerial Powers to a seven-day hardship contract. Powers, who last played for the Golden State Valkyries, brings nine years of WNBA experience and career averages of 10.4 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game.

What’s at stake

Minnesota, already the WNBA’s top team by record, is looking to stay sharp as the postseason approaches. Another win would further cement their dominance and provide momentum heading into the final stretch.

For Indiana, avoiding a sweep is about more than pride. With Clark still sidelined, the Fever need to show they can compete against elite opponents and lean on Mitchell and Boston to carry the load.
