Toss everything you know about NASCAR racing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway out the window. The famed track has wained in excitement over the years when the Cup Series took to the Brickyard so this year’s race switches from the traditional squared-oval to the venue’s road course for the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard.
Meaning, Kevin Harvick – who has won the last two Cup Series Indy races – slides way down the odds list at +2800. That allows two of this year’s powerhouse drivers to remain favorites starting with Chase Elliott at +180.
Elliott has seven road course wins, including one this season, which makes him the best road-racer among current drivers. Larson, coming in at +300 has two in his Cup Series career and both came this year including Watkins Glen last week.
Since there is no statistical history for NASCAR on the Indy road course oddsmakers are looking towards past road wins and how drivers have fared throughout this season. Here are the favorite drivers, through +1400, to win the Quaker State 400 outright according to Intertops. All five drivers have at least one road course win and all are making it to the playoffs.
Chase Elliott +180
Kyle Larson +300
Martin Truex Jr +700
Kyle Busch +900
Denny Hamlin +1400

2021 Verizon 200 Predictions
Kyle Larson +300
Kyle Larson has won two road course races this season, including last week, and finished 2nd at the COTA road race earlier this season. His two rough road runs were at Road America where he finished 16th and the Daytona road course where he crossed the finish 30th. That shows he’s improved dramatically at road course racing this season and he’s the hottest wheelman at the moment.
Martin Truex Jr +700
Martin Truex Jr has four road course wins in the Cup Series with the latest in 2019. His others came in 2018, 2017, and 2013. Last week at Watkins Glen he almost got his 5th road win finishing 3 rd . He was 9th three weeks ago at Road America. Three of his last four races have been inside the top ten with two 3rd place runs.
Christopher Bell +1600
Christopher Bell had a shot at winning last week at Watkins Glen before he and Larson mixed it up at the end for a 7th place finish. This year Bell opened up the year with a Daytona road win and he finished 2nd at Road America where he also has an Xfinity Series win.
Others: Take a look at Chase Elliott as he’s the winningest active Cup Series driver on road courses. Plus, he’s already won on a road course this season. I’m relegating Ford drivers to the darkhorse category as only two (Kevin Harvick at +2800 and Chase Briscoe +3300) cracked the top ten last week.
