2022 Mexico Open Odds and Predictions

It’s time for the Mexico Open which was formally part of the World Golf Championship event schedule. The 2022 event takes place at the Vidanta Academy of Golf at Vidanta Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. The course was designed by Greg Norman and opened in 2015 – more on the course below.

As many PGA fans know, this date on the schedule used to host the WGC Mexico event but that changed when it was announced that the WGC would not include the Mexico Open. It then became a full stand-alone signature event starting in 2022 complete with a larger field, 500 FedEx points, and some of the other perks that go along with winning an event on the PGA schedule.

Even though this is a completely new event on the PGA schedule, and no longer part of the WGC, the Mexico Open has been played since 1944. Former winners include Lee Trevino, Billy Casper, Roberto De Vicenzo, Ben Crenshaw, and Stewart Cink. Some familiar names are taking the top spot on the odds list starting with Jon Rahm this year.

The field is a great mix of PGA Tour regulars and Korn Ferry players as well as professionals from around the globe.

Here are the favorites to win the Mexico Open:

Abraham Ancer +1800

This is a Greg Norman-designed course that opened in 2015. Norman left plenty of options for players off the tee as there are spacious landing areas available on almost every hole. He did tighten things up as players work their way to the greens.

Approach shots will have to play over large bunkers that protect many of the obvious landing areas such as false fronts with a bunker. Or back of the green terraced areas with a bunker close behind. He also makes full use of the water from the Ameca River which runs through the property bringing water into the equation for several holes.

Visually, the course is stunning. The fairways are lush as are the greens. Trees come into play on many of the holes giving the course more of a southern United States feel. That’s until you notice the scenic views of the Sierra Madres Mountains which are visible from all over the grounds.

2022 Mexico Open Picks

Jon Rahm +450

Jon Rahm is the highest-ranked golfer in the field this week at the Mexico Open. Only a few weeks ago he was also the highest-ranked golfer in the world. He’s also the leader in Greens in Regulation which is a huge plus for a course that’s new to so many players. Rahm should be tough to beat especially if his putter is hot.

Kevin Na +2200

Kevin Na finished T14 at the Masters two weeks ago. It’s a course where he always plays well. This is not Augusta National but it does have some of the feel due to the lush fairways and terraced greens. Na is still getting back in the groove from the birth of his third child as he’s only played a handful of events this season. The Mexico Open is a venue where he could notch another PGA Tour win.

Carlos Ortiz +6600

Carlos Ortiz is the Vidanta Resorts golf ambassador and has had plenty of time on this course. He’s had some rough stretchs so far this season but did fight for the win at Mayakoba in November. He finished there with a 2nd place finish. He’s moved to No. 69 in FedEx points and is now inside the top-100 in the OWGR at 90th.

Others I Like: Tony Finau (+2000) has been out of the groove as of late. He’s now 149th in FedEx and has not had a top-25 finished in a full field event in almost nine months. Cameron Champ (+5000) has been fighting his wrist injury since 2021 and looks like he’s rounding the corner. If healthy, he could be in the run on Sunday.
