Let’s jump into the 2023 MLB saves leader season-long player props betting market.
Last season was a close battle for saves leader. The Guardians Emmanuel Clase (42 saves) ended up edging out the Braves’ Kenley Jansen (41 saves). Clase is among the favorites to repeat this season.
The last closer to repeat as saves leader was Jim Johnson in 2012 and 2013. Clase’s 42 saves last year was the most since Edwin Diaz had 57 saves in 2018. Will anyone get to 50 saves in 2023?
2023 MLB Saves Leader Contenders
Edwin Diaz (+500) is favored to lead MLB in saves during the 2023 regular season. Clase (+600), Camilo Doval (+700), Jordan Romano (+800) and Josh Hader (+800) are all paying under 10/1 odds.
Diaz has had 32 saves in each of the past two seasons with the Mets. His career-high is 57 saves (2018). With the Mets projected to be a strong team again, Diaz will have lots of opportunities to close out games.
Clase went from 24 saves in 71 games in 2021 to 42 saves in 77 games in 2022. The Guardians are in the weak AL Central and they’re often in close games, which leads to more saves.
Doval had 27 saves with only three blown saves last season with the Giants. SF aren’t going to win too many games, but when they do win, most games will be close and Doval will get the chance at a save.
Romano and Hader finished tied for 4th place in saves (36) last season. Romano should have plenty of save opportunities. He comes into this season with a career 2.58 ERA and 1.08 WHIP. Hader will have a full season with the Padres, but they will likely blow out a lot of teams, which means less saves.
2023 MLB Saves Leader Predictions
Jansen (+1800) is enticing at his odds, but he’ll be in Boston now and they only won 78 games last year. He had 41 saves with the Braves in 2022 and that was with him having seven blown saves.
My first pick is Ryan Pressly (+1100) of the Astros. Pressly had 33 saves last season despite only pitching in 50 games (48.1 innings) due to injuries. If he’s healthy all season, he’ll have 40+ saves.
David Bednar (+1000) is another dominant closer that can’t stay healthy. He had a career-high 19 saves with the Pirates last season. If he can stay off the IR, he could be among the leaders in saves.
I’m also betting on Clase. He’ll be on the mound every time the Guardians have a chance to close out a game. He rarely blows saves. He had a 1.36 ERA and 0.73 WHIP last season.
Cleveland have a good line-up and could improve upon their 92 wins from last season. If the Guardians can win close to 100 games, Clase could become the next pitcher to have 50 saves in a single season.
Best Bets: Clase (+600) and Pressly (+1100)
