2023 Rebel Stakes Predictions

When: Saturday, February 25th 2023

Where: Oaklawn Park

The Rebel Stakes is a Grade 2 event with 11 entries. Among the legitimate contenders are Giant Mischief, Reincarnate, Confidence Game, Powerful and Verifying with ratings over six points at HRN. My top three finishers in the Rebel Stakes could be a favorite along with horses that earned a good price in the odds.

How to Bet on Horse Racing

Win: Giant Mischief

This colt was bred in Kentucky and he raced for Spendthrift Farms, Stonestreet Stables, Steve Landers Racing and Et al. Giant Mischief finished first or second place in his juvenile campaign at Horseshoe Indianapolis, Keeneland and Remington Park. He is making his three-year debut at Oaklawn in the Rebel Stakes.

Giant Mischief was 2-for-2 in winning his races coming in for the Springboard Mile. He is stepping up in distances and grade for the Grade 2 Rebel, but he has the pedigree to win this race.

Place: Verifying

Trained by Brad Cox, this three-year-old colt is starting at the No. 1 gate in this race with jockey Florent Geroux. Verifying is a son of Justify and he has raced at Saratoga, Keeneland and Oaklawn Park. He won on Jan. 14 of this year at Oaklawn, covering one mile on dirt in 1:37.23 over Gun Pilot and Two Eagles River.

Verifying finished sixth in the 2022 Breeders Cup Juvenile at Keeneland on Nov. 4. However, he has matured in his new surroundings at Oaklawn with good workouts coming off his win. He was bred in Kentucky by Hunter Valley & Mountmellick Farm.

What Is a Place Bet?

Show: Powerful

Starting next to Verifying at the No. 2 gate, Powerful has Steven Asmussen as his trainer and Isaac Castillo as his jockey. Going over his two-year racing career, he finished first or second in three races at Saratoga and Churchill Downs. Powerful will get the start in the Rebel Stakes as first in his three-year career.

Sired by Nyquist, he was bred in Kentucky and raced for Cortlandt Farms (Donald Adams). Powerful has the finishing speed to keep up with the leaders in the backstretch if certain breaks fall his way.
