2022 AT&T Byron Nelson Odds and Picks

The AT&T Byron Nelson is next up on the PGA schedule. As predicted, there are some big names in the field starting with Scottie Sheffler who won the Masters only a few short weeks ago. This is the first time that the tournament has been sold out since 2008!

Sheffler enters as the lone favorite to win the Byron Nelson but he’s got some close competition according to oddsmakers. Sheffler comes in at +1000 but Justin Thomas comes in at +1200 followed by Xander Schauffele at +1800. It’s a tight week as seven of the top fifteen players on the OWGR rankings are in the field. Sheffler tops that list as he’s ranked No. 1 once again this week.

Last year Lee Kyoung-Hoon took the title by going 25-under four in the tournament and beating Sam Burns by three strokes. This year Hoon comes in as the defending champ at +10000. He’s also the third South Korean golfer to win the event since 2013. As for Burns, he comes in as one of the favorites this week at +2000.

This is only the second year of a five-year run at TPC Craig Ranch. But don’t expect players to be worried about a course that is relatively new on the schedule. Plenty of PGA Tour players say that this venue is one of their “home courses” and it’s been on the Korn Ferry Tour schedule as well.

Does that mean there could be some golfers further down the odds list that could rise and take a win? Yes, possibly more than other weeks. But still, they will have to get past some of the best-ranked golfers in the world. Here are the top-five favorites through +2000 to win the 2022 Wells Fargo Championship outright.

Scottie Scheffler +1000

Justin Thomas +1200

Xander Schauffele +1800

Jordan Spieth +2000

Sam Burns +2000

Dustin Johnson +2000

Where: McKinney, Texas

Course: TPC Craig Ranch

Format: Stroke Play

Par: 72

Length: 7,468

When: May 12 – 15, 2022

Purse: $9.1 Million

TV Coverage: CBS/Golf

TPC Craig Ranch is a course where PGA Tour players should be able to card some great scores. The course is also a bit longer than when the KFT Championships were played here due to the lengthening of a few holes but nothing that should shock anyone in the field that has played here before.

Fairways are moderate with plenty of room on most but landing zones are well protected by bunkers which also is true for the greens. Everything is well protected by those bunkers and a stream works its way through the course around a dozen times. The greens are Bentgrass and average 6,800 square feet.

2022 AT&T Byron Nelson Predictions

Scottie Scheffler +1000

You can probably bank on Scottie Scheffler as being a favorite, if not the outright favorite, in any tournament he enters for the foreseeable future. He’s had multiple wins this season including the Masters. He comes into the Byron Nelson with his driver, irons, and putter have all been on point this season. And, he’s avoided too many mistakes at critical points during his tournaments so far in 2022. After a short break following the Masters, he returned to score a low round of 64 last week.

Will Zalatoris +2200

Will Zalatoris has moved to the No. 19 spot in FedEx points and he could be a threat this week as he knows TPC Craig Ranch well. He can look at this course as a “home favorite” as he live in Dallas and has stated that he’s played here “hundreds of times” in the past. He was T17 here last year and is coming in with three tournaments out of four where he has scored no worse than T6. Zalatoris should be able to put his knowledge of the greens and approach areas to goo use this week.

Cameron Champ +5000

Cameron Champ seems to have shaken off the wrist injury that was bothering him He played well at the Masters where he carded a T10 and followed up with a T6 in Mexico at Vidanta. He led the field in points gained off the tee. Champ played his college golf at Texas A&M and he’s hit this course a few times so he knows how it plays. A healthy Cameron Champ is a dangerous Cameron Champ.

Others I Like: Last year Lee Kyoung-Hoon put on a show en route to winning the 2021 AT&T Byron Nelson. He’s not shown that same spark this season so far but his game still fits this course perfectly. I’ve mentioned Luke List (+10000) a few times this season and he’s on my radar again. List has one of the best putters on Tour and this is a course where he can put that skill to perfect use.
