New-Look Rapids Aim to Extend Road Success Against Improving Dynamo

After a tactical shake-up and an impressive victory last weekend, the Colorado Rapids will try to keep their momentum rolling when they visit the Houston Dynamo on Saturday. Colorado’s Shape Shift Pays Off

Colorado (4-2-2, 14 points) may have found a formula that works — at least temporarily — in last week’s thrilling 3-2 win over San Diego FC. Manager Chris Armas deployed a surprising 4-2-2-2 formation that caught the expansion side off guard and helped generate attacking flow and fluidity in the final third.

Rafael Navarro, Djordje Mihailovic, and Darren Yapi all found the back of the net as the Rapids showed off their growing offensive depth.

“Regardless, our principles don’t change. Our behaviors don’t change,” Armas said of the tactical wrinkle. “We’re going to come after you, man. You guys are good, but that’s our way.”

Now Armas faces a familiar opponent in Houston coach Ben Olsen — a former U.S. national team teammate — and hinted that more tactical surprises could be in store, particularly against a Houston side that, like San Diego, values controlling possession.

Dynamo Finding Their Rhythm — Slowly

Houston (1-4-3, 6 points) has shown signs of life in recent weeks, including a 1-0 win over LAFC and a 1-1 draw with the LA Galaxy. Forward Ezequiel Ponce, the team’s key attacking piece, scored in that draw — his second of the season — as he continues to adjust to MLS and Olsen’s structure.

“We asked [Ponce] to stay patient… and he was rewarded,” Olsen said. “That is how he is going to score goals.”

The Dynamo’s offense still needs sharpening, but the late-window acquisitions around Ponce are expected to provide more consistent service and support. While Houston gave up an equalizer to a 10-man Galaxy side, the overall performance showed more cohesion and structure than earlier in the season.

Colorado sits tied for third and has already earned two road wins — a significant turnaround from last year. Houston, meanwhile, is trying to claw its way up from the lower tier of the standings, with Ponce’s finishing and discipline offering some hope.
