Reds Turn to Hunter Greene to Halt Skid Against Surging Braves
The Cincinnati Reds are in desperate need of a turnaround, and they’re turning to their ace, Hunter Greene, to deliver one. As they visit the Atlanta Braves for Game 3 of a four-game set on Wednesday, Greene is tasked with halting a four-game losing streak and keeping the Reds from falling further behind in the standings.
Reds Slumping, Braves Gaining Steam
The Braves have taken the first two games of the series, winning 4-0 on Monday and walking off with a 2-1 victory in 10 innings on Tuesday. Atlanta now holds a three-game winning streak, while the Reds have lost six of their last eight and are struggling to generate consistent offense.

The Reds will need a spark—and they’re hoping Greene is the one to provide it.
Hunter Greene Locked In
Hunter Greene (4-2, 2.53 ERA) has been the Reds’ most reliable arm this season. He’s coming off a dominant outing against the Nationals, in which he allowed just one run over six innings and racked up a season-high 12 strikeouts.
“Twelve K’s against a big league team isn’t easy to do… To accomplish that on the last pitch and see the ball enter the glove, I like to get fired up. It was warranted in that situation.”
— Hunter Greene, Reds Pitcher
Greene has five quality starts in seven appearances and has struck out at least eight in five of them. Against the Braves, he’s been equally impressive—2-0 in three career starts with a 3.00 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 18 innings, including seven scoreless frames in a 4-1 win last season.
“His stuff was dominant… They made some adjustments, not getting hits, but they made him work.”
— Terry Francona, Reds Manager
Braves Counter With Holmes
Atlanta will start Grant Holmes (2-2, 4.24 ERA), who is coming off a strong performance despite a loss to the Dodgers. He gave up just two runs over six innings and struck out nine, showing poise after a rough previous outing against Arizona.
“I’d hate to think where we’d be without [Holmes]… We’d be dipping into the depth and probably bringing guys up before we wanted to.”
— Brian Snitker, Braves Manager
Holmes has limited big-league experience against Cincinnati, posting a 4.15 ERA over three appearances. In his only start versus the Reds last September, he allowed two runs in four innings of a 6-5 win.
Reds Hit by Injuries
Cincinnati continues to battle health setbacks. Third baseman Noelvi Marte was scratched shortly before Tuesday’s game due to left side discomfort stemming from a previous hit-by-pitch. Marte has been a bright spot since his call-up, batting .294 with 17 RBIs and eight extra-base hits.

Meanwhile, rookie Tyler Callihan will miss 6–8 weeks after undergoing surgery to repair two broken bones in his left forearm following a collision with the wall. Jacob Hurtubise has been called up from Triple-A to take his roster spot.
