One of our favorite aspects of Major League Baseball is when the benches clear and we get a good, old-fashion brawl. These fights have dwindled over the years, but they still create a buzz unlike anything else in the game.
With that said, everything you know and love about MLB fights, can be thrown out the window when it comes to a rumored bout that has set social media on fire.
Yes, we’re talking about the battle of mascots as the Philadelphia Phillies’ Phillie Phanatic is reportedly set to fight the Atlanta Braves’ Blooper in a three-round boxing match on May 27, prior to a game between the two teams.
These NL East divisional rivals have seen plenty of each other over the last few years including in the MLB Playoffs. Their beef is real, but a fight between the two mascots might not be.
The rumored mascot bout is said to take place at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, PA, before the scheduled game between the Phillies and Braves takes place.
Whether this fight happens or not, sportsbooks are listing odds for this boxing match. However, keep in mind that these odds can be found in the entertainment section, which gives you some indication as to how serious the oddsmakers are taking this.

Who Is The Phillie Phanatic?
Created by Bonnie Harison and Wayde Erikson, who worked with The Muppets, the Phillie Phanatic debuted in 1978.
Quickly endearing himself to the rough and rugged Philly fanbase, the Phanatic rose up the ranks as one of the top mascots in all of sports.
Eventually, his shenanigans would land Phillie Phanatic in hot water. And, it would end up costing him two losses in what we deem as official fights.
The first fight came in a September 1982 game where St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Lonnie Smith took offense to Phanatic’s taunting and landed a tackle that should’ve earned him a shot with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Before you throw some online haymakers at me, the St. Louis Rams didn’t exist for another decade. So, the Chiefs were the closest NFL team.
Anyhow, we count that as Phanatic’s first official loss. Six years later, Phillie suffered a brutal defeat at the hands of Los Angeles Dodgers’ manager Tommy Lasorda who absolutely hated the mascot.
During a nationally televised game, Lasorda could’ve been arrested for the mud-hole that he stomped on Phillie Phanatic.
Yet, Phillie Phanatic didn’t just participate in fights on the field, he also engaged in battles that took place in courtrooms. In 2010, the Philly mascot took on a woman who said that Phanatic hurt her during a minor league game.
Because of his long history as a fighter, which I would describe him as a “soup can” at best, the oddsmakers have Phillie Phanatic as the odds-on favorite.
Who Is Blooper?
In 2018, the Atlanta Braves decided to retire their previous mascot (Homer) and debut Blooper who was bigger, stronger, more energetic and powerful than the aging Homer.
The Atlanta fanbase wasn’t thrilled over their new hero Blooper. It took a while before he won their hearts.
Just because he hasn’t been around the block as much as Phillie Phanatic, doesn’t mean that Blooper is any less menacing.
In 2019, Blooper pretended to steal Bryce Harper’s massive contract, which was $330 million at the time. He’s also taken shots at rival cities like Cincinnati, which prompted heated responses by the Reds and Skyline Chili.
There’s no footage of any “official” fights for Blooper, but that doesn’t mean he’s not capable of throwing hands. Atlanta isn’t known for being a quiet, peaceful city.
Phillie Phanatic vs. Blooper Predictions
Phillie Phanatic definitely has the edge in experience. He’s been in some big-time fights on the national stage. Unfortunately, many of his “official” fights ended in losses.
Blooper has the size, weight and power advantages. In fact, he’s apparently six inches taller which stands to reason that he will have the reach advantage as well.
I’m taking the upset for this epic battle of mascots. I think Blooper’s size and power advantages are enough to pull off the surprising victory. Somewhere in heaven, Tommy Lasorda will be smiling down on Blooper’s victory.
Bet: Blooper (+200)
