Mets’ Brett Baty Hopes to Stay Hot in Rubber Game vs. Dodgers
As part of his $765 million deal with the New York Mets, Juan Soto claimed his favored No. 22 — a number previously worn by Brett Baty. Fortunately for the Mets, Baty didn’t just give up the digits — he’s been giving them production, too.
Now, as the Mets host the Los Angeles Dodgers in the rubber match of their three-game set Sunday night, Baty will aim to extend his torrid streak, while Soto looks to break out of a prolonged slump.
Baty Shines Since Recall, Soto Shows Signs of Life
Batting out of the No. 9 spot, Baty went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk in Saturday’s 5-2 win. The performance marked his third straight multi-hit game and continued a strong run since his May 7 recall from Triple-A Syracuse. In 15 games, Baty is hitting .318 with five homers and 13 RBIs.

“I feel like I’m contributing to wins. It’s nice to hit the ball hard.”
— Brett Baty, Mets Infielder
Juan Soto, meanwhile, may finally be showing signs of escaping a slump. His two-run double in the fourth inning broke a 2-2 tie Saturday and marked his first extra-base hit since May 9. Though he finished with two hits, Soto is batting just .156 over his last 12 games.
Still, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza remains unfazed.
“We know that sooner than later, the results are going to be there.”
— Carlos Mendoza, Mets Manager
Dodgers Look to Rebound, Ohtani Preps for Mound Progress
Los Angeles will turn to right-hander Landon Knack (2-1, 6.17 ERA), who allowed four runs over five innings in relief in his last outing against Arizona. Knack gave up five runs in two innings against the Mets in Game 2 of the 2023 NLCS.
Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, and Freddie Freeman combined to go 1-for-12 with five strikeouts Saturday. But Dodgers manager Dave Roberts isn’t sounding the alarm.
“We just couldn’t really muster anything after those early innings.”
— Dave Roberts, Dodgers Manager

Regardless of his production at the plate, Ohtani will attract headlines Sunday as he prepares to throw his first live batting practice session since his second Tommy John surgery.
“There’s a lot of anticipation. But I think he’s really looking forward to it.”
— Dave Roberts
Pitching Matchup: Senga vs. Knack
Kodai Senga (4-3, 1.43 ERA) gets the start for New York, looking to rebound from a loss to the Red Sox last Monday in which he allowed three runs over six innings. Senga pitched well in his only regular-season start against the Dodgers last year, allowing just one run over six innings, though he’s struggled against them in postseason play.
With the series tied 1-1, Sunday night’s finale provides a high-stakes test for both teams — and a showcase for two young pitchers and two stars trying to find rhythm as the season heats up.
