Short-Handed Real Salt Lake Takes Aim at Visiting D.C. United
Real Salt Lake is hoping to snap a seven-match winless streak when they return home to face D.C. United on Saturday in Sandy, Utah.
With only 15 points through 17 matches, RSL (4-10-3) is struggling to find the back of the net — tallying just five goals during their recent skid. They currently rank among the lowest-scoring teams in MLS.
“While we haven’t been able to score goals, it’s not from a lack of trying, it’s not from a lack of creating really good opportunities,” said RSL manager Pablo Mastroeni. “It’s just that final piece.”

RSL Missing Key Weapons
Salt Lake’s attack will be further hampered by the absence of top scorer Diego Luna, who is away on international duty with the U.S. team at the Gold Cup. Forward Dominik Marczuk is also unavailable as he represents Poland at the UEFA U-21 Championship.
The good news for RSL is that Diogo Goncalves is expected to return to the lineup after missing four matches due to injury.
Despite their home struggles this season (2-4-1), RSL boasts a dominant all-time record against D.C. United in Sandy, going 8-1-3 in their 12 previous home meetings.
D.C. United Reeling After Blowout Loss
D.C. United (4-8-6, 18 points) comes into the match on shaky ground following a 7-1 defeat to the Chicago Fire — a result that tied a franchise record for most goals conceded in a single game.
“It was an unacceptable performance from us,” midfielder Brandon Servania said. “… As a group, we need to be more organized and proactive, solving problems before they become emergency situations.”
Like Salt Lake, D.C. is also dealing with key absences. Defender Aaron Herrera is away with the Guatemala national team for the Gold Cup, while top scorer Christian Benteke remains questionable after missing the last five matches with an ankle injury.
The Black-and-Red have struggled offensively themselves, notching just 17 goals this season. Defensively, things haven’t been much better — D.C.’s 36 goals allowed is tied for the most in the league.
Who Will Bounce Back?
Both sides are desperate for a turnaround, and Saturday presents a crucial opportunity. While RSL’s recent form has been poor, their historic success against D.C. at home could provide a confidence boost.
