Diamondbacks Go For Sweep as Suarez’s Historic Weekend Continues in Colorado

The thin air of the Mile High City has been very kind to the Arizona Diamondbacks this weekend. Powered by a relentless offensive assault and a historic performance from their veteran slugger, the D-backs are on the verge of a three-game series sweep. They will look to put the finishing touches on a perfect weekend on Sunday afternoon as they face the struggling host, the Colorado Rockies, in the series finale. For Arizona, it’s a chance to build crucial momentum in the tight National League West race. For Colorado, it’s another battle to avoid adding to a season of historic futility.

A Milestone Weekend for Suarez

This series has belonged to Eugenio Suarez. The Arizona Diamondbacks’ third baseman has put on a power display, launching three home runs in the first two games, but Friday night’s performance was one for the history books. Suarez hit two home runs in the 14-8 victory, the second of which was the 300th of his impressive career. The milestone places him in truly elite company, as he joins Hall of Famer Andres Galarraga (399) and future Hall of Famer Miguel Cabrera (511) as the only Venezuelan-born players to ever reach the 300-homer plateau.

For the 33-year-old veteran, the moment was not lost on him. “It means a lot. I never thought this guy from Venezuela would put my name on that list,” Suarez said after the game. “It’s very special. It’s very good. It feels like a dream come true.” He added another home run for good measure in Saturday’s 5-3 win, continuing a weekend he will never forget and further cementing his place in the history of his country and among all great power hitters in MLB teams history.

The Coors Field Effect is in Full Swing

While Suarez has been the headliner, he is far from the only Diamondback enjoying the hitter-friendly confines of Coors Field. The entire Arizona offense has been firing on all cylinders. Veteran Ketel Marte has been on an absolute tear, going an incredible 7-for-10 in the first two games with three doubles and six RBIs. As a team, the D-backs have hit six home runs in the series and have scored 19 runs. This kind of offensive explosion is exactly what makes playing in Denver unique. The high elevation allows balls to travel farther, turning routine fly balls into doubles and long fly balls into home runs. Understanding how to bet on games at Coors Field, with its notoriously high totals, is a key strategy for any baseball fan, a topic often explored in our expert betting guide.

The Pfaadt Test: A Coors Field Debut

The Diamondbacks will hand the ball to right-hander Brandon Pfaadt (8-4, 5.38 ERA), who will face one of the most significant challenges for any young pitcher: his first career start at Coors Field. Pitching a mile above sea level presents a unique set of problems. Fastballs have less movement, breaking balls don’t break as sharply, and the massive outfield requires pitchers to be nearly perfect with their command. While Pfaadt has had great success against the Rockies in his career—posting a 2-0 record in three starts—all of those games came in the pitcher-friendly environment of his home park in Arizona. How he adapts his pitch arsenal to the thin air of Denver will be the key to his success on Sunday and a major factor in whether the D-backs can complete the sweep.

A Season of Struggles in Colorado

The Rockies are simply trying to find some positives in what has become a historically difficult season. Their loss on Saturday was another step in the wrong direction, as they try to avoid being swept for the 12th time this year. The team is currently on pace to have one of the worst records of the modern era (since 1901), a distinction no club wants. While they were shut out eight times in their first 50 games, the offense has shown more life in June, averaging nearly five runs per game this month. The problem, however, remains an inability to get the big hit when it matters most. In Saturday’s loss, they went just 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position, leaving multiple opportunities on the table.

“(Friday) night we scored eight runs, we scored a bunch of runs on the road, so it’s been trending better overall,” interim manager Warren Schaeffer said. “Overall, hitting with runners in scoring position has been better.” One of the few consistent bright spots has been Tyler Freeman, who is hitting .362 over his last 15 games.

Senzatela’s Search for a Solution vs. Arizona

The task of stopping the D-backs’ hot offense and avoiding the sweep falls to veteran right-hander Antonio Senzatela (2-10, 6.72 ERA). For Senzatela, this is a particularly daunting challenge, as he has struggled mightily against Arizona throughout his career. In 22 career appearances against the Diamondbacks, he has a 3-9 record with a bloated 5.73 ERA. The matchup looks even tougher on paper when considering he will be facing them at home, where his career ERA against Arizona is a nearly identical 5.74. This lopsided history will be a major focus on the scores and odds board. He will need to be at his absolute best to give his team a chance.
