The bookmakers have released their 2023 AFL winner odds, so it’s time to analyze the top contenders and potential sleepers. Below, I look at all the standout teams before sharing my 2023 AFL premiership predictions.

Top Contenders to Win the 2023 AFL Premiership

Geelong (+400)

To say that Geelong dominated the AFL in 2022 would be an understatement. After winning 18 of their 22 regular season games, the Cats finished eight points clear atop the ladder before securing an 81-point victory over Sydney in the Grand Final.

Geelong has now reached six of the previous 16 Grand Finals, claiming four flags along the way. Following a commanding 2022 campaign, Chris Scott’s men will be confident of sealing back-to-back titles next year.

Sydney (+600)

There is no hiding the fact that Sydney suffered a humiliating defeat to Geelong in last season’s Grand Final. Still, the Swans will enter the new season as the bookies’ second-favorites following an impressive 2022 campaign.

Sydney’s last premiership triumph came back in 2012. Despite reaching three Grand Finals since then, the club has failed to add another flag to the collection. Needless to say, the Swans will be desperate to go all the way in 2023.

Melbourne (+650)

When the Demons kick-started their 2022 campaign with a ten-game winning streak, they looked destined to defend their premiership crown. However, a mid-season wobble saw them drop down the ladder.

Granted, Melbourne recovered to finish second on the ladder, but they ended up falling to Brisbane in the semi-finals. With Clayton Oliver and Christian Petracca in their ranks, the Dees stand an excellent chance of regaining the flag next year.

Western Bulldogs (+1400)

The Western Bulldogs won the 2016 Grand Final before finishing as runners-up in 2021. Having qualified for the finals series in six of the past eight years, the Dogs will almost certainly be there or thereabouts at the end of next season.

Fremantle (+1800)

Last season, the Dockers won 15 of their 22 regular-season games – finishing just two points behind Melbourne, Sydney and Collingwood. Fremantle was league’s surprise package in 2022 and could upset the AFL odds in 2023.

Best Bet: Geelong (+400)

At the end of the day, it is difficult to look past Geelong when it comes to picking the 2023 AFL premiership winner. The Cats were on a totally different level to everyone else last season, so I expect them to dominate again next year.

Let’s not forget that Scott’s men won 18 of their 22 regular-season games before racking up 133 points against Sydney in the Grand Final. Given what they achieved last season, odds of +400 for the Cats to clinch the flag in 2023 seem too good to miss.
