Whitecaps and Rapids Clash in Bid to Snap MLS Losing Streaks

The Vancouver Whitecaps and Colorado Rapids will meet Saturday night in Commerce City, Colo., both hoping to reverse recent slides that have seen their momentum stall during a key stretch of the MLS season. With playoff positioning on the line, this Western Conference showdown carries significant weight.

Whitecaps Regroup After Mid-Season Dip

Vancouver (11-4-5, 38 points) has lost three of its last four MLS matches and relinquished the top spot in the Western Conference to San Diego FC. But head coach Jesper Sorensen remains confident that his squad is about to bounce back, especially now that several key players have returned from international duty.

Brian White, Jayden Nelson, and Sebastian Berhalter all returned for Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Valour FC in the Canadian Championship quarterfinals and are expected to feature on Saturday. However, influential midfielder Ryan Gauld remains sidelined with a knee injury.

“I think that we’ll be picking up again,” Sorensen said. “Right now, we’ve also been relying a lot on a lot of the same players performing, and it’s normal that it’s not just a straight line, that it’s up and down in the season, and we’ll pick up again.”

Rapids Hope to Capitalize at Home

The Rapids (7-10-5, 26 points) are in a similar rut, having dropped five of their last seven MLS matches. A 3-0 loss to LAFC on Wednesday summed up their struggles—Colorado played nearly the full match down a man after Jackson Travis received a red card just six minutes in.

Colorado has scored multiple goals in just two of its last 13 league games and been shut out five times during that stretch. Djordje Mihailovic (8 goals) and Rafael Navarro (7 goals) have shouldered the offensive load, but the rest of the team has contributed just nine goals combined.

“The main thing for us is that we have to understand that there’s going to be no easy games, and this is a huge opportunity for us, at home, against a good team,” said head coach Chris Armas. “But we’re a good team, and we welcome the challenge. We’ve got to focus on the controllables. … You can’t look externally for solutions.”
