2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship Odds and Picks

The 2022 PGA Tour Regular Season is in the books and the top-125 players in FedEx points are teeing it up this week at the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, Tennessee. It’s the first tournament in the playoffs and you can probably guess some of the favorites this week starting with Rory McIlroy at +1000.

McIlroy is one of the top players in the world and one of the most popular on the PGA Tour, especially since the advent of LIV Golf. He’s followed by Patrick Cantlay who comes in at +1400 before Thursday’s opening round. Then there’s a bottleneck on the odds list after McIlroy and Cantlay.

PGA Sportsbooks

That’s to be expected in this situation as the field consists of the top 125 PGA Tour players according to FedEx rankings. Everyone teeing off is a threat, theoretically, to win this tournament. The key is that almost half of the field won’t make it to the next round.

Here are the favorites through +1600 to win the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship outright:

Rory McIlroy +1000

Patrick Cantlay +1400

Scottie Scheffler +1600

Xander Schauffele +1600

Justin Thomas +1600

Cameron Smith +1600

How the PGA Playoffs work: The top 125 players in FedEx points are eligible for The Northern Trust at Liberty National Golf Club. Then the list is slimmed down to only 70 golfers who will play in the no-cut BMW Championship next week. Next up, the top 30 of those players fight it out in three weeks at the season-ending no-cut Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.

TPC Southwind is a familiar course to these players. Last season, during the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational, the average score was right at 1-under at 69.05. The course is known for small Bermuda greens, rolling zoysia fairways that play tight, and plenty of water. The list of designers includes Ron Prichard, Hubert Green, and Fuzzy Zoeller so you can count on bunkers coming into play.

Last year during the opening round of the playoffs, Tony Finau won over Cameron Smith. That was a playoff win over this year’s Open Champion but it came on a different course – Liberty National Golf Course near the Statue of Liberty. This year’s opening round takes place in the heat and humidity of Memphis with 5000 FedEx points on the line.

2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship Predictions

Rory McIlroy +1000

Rory McIlroy comes in as the favorite following a season where he has won twice. He’s also carded eleven finishes inside the top-20 with only a single missed cut. His last eight outings include a win and five finishes of 5th or better. He’s currently ranked 6th in FedEx points and 3rd on the OWGR. Rory has had plenty of time to rethink his final day during the Open where he finished 3rd. He may be more aggressive this week. Rory is ranked 2nd on Tour in driving distance which will come in handy on this course – if he stays in the fairway.

Scottie Scheffler +1600

Scottie Scheffler enters the week as the No. 1 ranked golfer in both FedEx points and the OWGR. He’s won three times this season, four if you count the Ryder Cup. Scheffler ended the season on somewhat of a rough note. He finished T2 at the U.S. Open but followed that with a T13 at the Travelers. Then he missed the weekend at the Scottish Open and ended his regular season T21 at the Open. He’s also a birdie machine being ranked 2nd on Tour which is a huge plus at TPC Southwind.

Billy Horschel +5000

Billy Horschel plays great golf at TPC Southwind – he’s gone eight of eight since 2013 on this course. Five of those outings were with finishes of 10th or better. He won the Memorial earlier this season and finished 2nd at the New Orleans Zurich Classic. He had a difficult Scottish run and finished T27 at the Wyndham Championship. His huge plus coming out of the Wyndham is that he finished all four rounds at or below 69 with an opening round of 67. Horschel will need his short game to be better than it was in Scotland to win this weekend.

Others: Tony Finau (+2200) should be in the mix! But the question is if he can keep up the level of energy he has had to close out the regular season by winning back-to-back. I will be watching Rickie Fowler (+25000) following his nail-biting wait to see if he would make the 125 mark following his missed cut last week. This will be a true test of where his game is heading.
