Mets vs Marlins Picks and Predictions — August 30, 2025
The New York Mets turn to top prospect Jonah Tong on Friday night when they host the Miami Marlins at Citi Field. Tong, the Mets’ No. 4 prospect, makes his long-awaited MLB debut against Miami right-hander Eury Perez in the second game of a four-game set.
The Mets (70-65) had their three-game win streak snapped Thursday after three errors fueled a 7-4 Marlins win. Miami (60-75) has struggled most of the year but looks to build momentum behind Perez, who has rediscovered his form since returning from Tommy John surgery. Mets Can Win If…
Jonah Tong delivers on the hype. The 22-year-old dominated in the minors this season, going 10-5 with a 1.43 ERA and 179 strikeouts across Double-A and Triple-A. His last two starts at Syracuse were electric: 11 2/3 scoreless innings with 17 Ks.
“That kid’s special … I haven’t seen a fastball like that before,” rookie teammate Nolan McLean said. “And I know he’s developed three more pitches since then. It’s going to be fun to watch him Friday.”
If the Mets’ defense sharpens after Thursday’s sloppy showing and the bats stay consistent, New York has a strong chance to back its rookie arm.
Marlins Can Win If…
Eury Perez continues his hot streak. The 22-year-old righty is 6-1 with a 2.63 ERA in his last 10 starts since returning in June. His electric fastball and improved pitch mix make him a tough matchup for any lineup.
“The command of his pitches was great … he utilized all of his stuff,” Miami manager Clayton McCullough said after Perez’s latest win.
If Perez quiets the Mets’ lineup and Miami capitalizes on New York’s mistakes in the field, the Marlins can spoil Tong’s debut and grab back-to-back road wins.

Pick: Mets -115
Projected Final Score: Mets 5, Marlins 3
Perez is pitching well, but the Mets have been energized by their rookie arms and could get another boost from Tong’s debut. Expect a strong showing from the prospect and just enough offensive support for New York to even the series.
