The Giants are coming off one of those losses that can stick. They had a four-run lead Thursday, got a strong enough start from Landen Roupp, and still watched the bullpen give up seven runs over the final three innings. The San Francisco Giants schedule and stats show a club that can hit for average and doubles, but the late-game pitching has been a major problem.
McDonald gives San Francisco some upside, but he is not as proven as López. The Giants need him to throw strikes early and avoid giving Atlanta free traffic. That is easier said than done against a Braves lineup that still carries real power, even with Acuña out.
The offense is the better part of the Giants’ case.
