Ball State at Northwestern Best Pick, Prediction and Odds

Our number has Northwestern by 19.3. No line yet: Northwestern is a bet at -16 or shorter, Ball State at +22.5 or more.

No spread had been posted for this game as of 28 September 2026. Our number is Northwestern by 19.3, and a side becomes a bet when the spread sits at least 3 points away from it. Until there is a price, the call is the range.

How the number is built

The method is one clause: our number is half the difference between the home team’s average margin at home and the visitor’s average margin on the road, against FBS teams only, 2025 and 2026 together.

Northwestern is 5-2 at home against FBS teams over that span, winning by 10.3 points a game across 7 games. Ball State is 0-10 on the road against FBS teams, losing by 28.4 a game across 10 games. The difference is 38.7 points. Half of it is 19.3.

That is 17 games, split 7 and 10. Both clear the 4-game minimum. Ball State’s 10 is the larger sample, and it is also the more consistent one.

Ball State on the road

Ten road games against FBS teams, ten losses. In 2025: 31-0 at Purdue, 42-3 at Auburn, 31-25 at UConn, 42-0 at Western Michigan, 21-7 at Northern Illinois, 38-9 at Toledo and 45-24 at Miami (OH).

In 2026: 56-3 at Ohio State on 5 September, 51-15 at Liberty on 19 September and 26-13 at Kent State on 26 September.

Nine of the ten were lost by 13 points or more. The exception was the 6-point loss at UConn in September 2025. Ball State scored 3 points or fewer in four of the ten.

Northwestern at home

Northwestern’s home sample is narrower. It lost 34-14 to Oregon and 24-22 to Michigan in 2025, and won the other five.

The wins were 17-14 over UCLA, 42-7 over UL Monroe, 19-0 over Purdue and 38-35 over Minnesota in 2025, then 41-7 over Colorado on 19 September. Two of the five were decided by 3 points, UCLA and Minnesota. The average of 10.3 leans on the 35-point win over UL Monroe and the 34-point win over Colorado.

2026 so far

Northwestern is 2-1 and has scored 32.7 points a game while allowing 18.0. It opened with a 34-18 win over South Dakota State, a team outside the FBS that the method leaves out. It lost 29-23 at Indiana on 25 September, its first Big Ten game.

Ball State is 1-3 and has scored 18.0 while allowing 37.5. Its win was 41-17 over Stony Brook, also outside the FBS. Against its three FBS opponents, all on the road, it has scored 10.3 a game and allowed 44.3.

Last season

Northwestern went 7-6 in 2025 and won by 3.5 points a game. It ended with a 34-7 win over Central Michigan on 26 December, at a neutral site. Ball State went 4-8 and was outscored by 14.0 a game.

This is not a conference game, and the two teams did not meet in 2025.

ESPN’s FPI gives Northwestern a 98.9% chance to win. Nobody needs a model to pick the winner here. The only question worth money is the size of the spread.

Pick: no bet until a line is posted

Our number is Northwestern by 19.3, and the threshold is 3 points.

Northwestern becomes the bet at -16 or shorter, where the gap is 3.3. At -16.5 the gap is 2.8, which is a pass. Ball State becomes the bet at +22.5 or more, a gap of 3.2. At +22 it is 2.7, also a pass.

So any line from Northwestern -16.5 to -22 is no bet. At either edge, a half-point move in the posted line is the difference between a bet and a pass.

What changes it

The line, first. This page is re-read the week of the game.

The samples, second. Any Northwestern home game against an FBS team before 10 October, and any Ball State road game against one, goes into the averages. Northwestern’s sample is only 7 games, so one result there moves our number more than one Ball State result does.

Availability is the third, and this page does not state it. Check the injury report before you bet.
