A different kind of match
What makes a Champions League night different from a league weekend? The draw, mostly. In 2025-26 only 33 of the 186 matches settled in 90 minutes were drawn, 17.7%. Europe’s big domestic leagues drew a quarter of theirs. Home sides won 92, 49.5%; away sides 61.
And the goals came. Matches averaged 3.46, both teams scored in 105, and 122 went over 2.5. The final, Paris Saint-Germain against Arsenal, finished 1-1 and went to penalties, which PSG won 4-3; like the two ties that went to extra time, it is left out of these figures.
The commonest score was 2-0 either way, then 2-1 and 1-0. A 3-2 made the top five. This is not a cagey competition.
What the price thought of the draw
From October to May, across 99 priced matches, the draw came in 16 times. Even matches drew 4 times in 28; heavy favorites, 5 times in 37. In every band the draw landed below its price.
One competition, one season, under a hundred priced matches. The lean is consistent, but the sample is small. We read each draw price on its own, and so should you.
Totals at 2.5 and 3.5
The books posted Champions League totals at 2.5 and 3.5 in equal measure from October to May, 46 matches each. At 2.5 the over came in 21 times; at 3.5, 24 times. The higher line did better than the lower.
Goals per match ran highest in March, 4.20 across the knockout ties, and lowest in November and December, 3.06.
Long shots
Underdogs won 26 of the 99 priced matches. The longest was Bodø/Glimt over Inter, 2-1 at +950 in February, in the knockout playoff. Bodø/Glimt had already beaten Atlético Madrid 2-1 at +750 in January. Ajax beat Villarreal at +650.
How we price a Champions League match
For Europe’s clubs we use the same method as for their leagues (see the soccer predictions page), and it needs a common yardstick: each side’s scoring and conceding against its own league’s average. Clubs from different leagues are measured against different averages, and that is the method’s limit in European competition.
Champions League betting tips
- Price the draw below the league rate. 17.7% of matches settled in 90 minutes were drawn.
- Expect goals. 3.46 a match.
- Read a two-legged tie as two matches. Our predictions price the 90 minutes in front of us.
- Know what settles. Most bets settle on 90 minutes; “to qualify” includes extra time and penalties.
- Five points of daylight, or pass.
