How the number is built

The method is one clause: our number is half the difference between the home team’s average margin at home and the visitor’s average margin on the road, against FBS teams only, 2025 and 2026 together.

Fresno State is 5-2 at home against FBS teams over that span, winning by 11.1 points a game across 7 games. Boise State is 4-4 on the road against FBS teams, losing by 0.8 a game across 8 games. The difference is 11.9 points. Half of it is 5.9.

That is 15 games, split 7 and 8. Both clear the 4-game minimum.

Fresno State at home

In 2025 Fresno State beat Georgia Southern 42-14, Nevada 20-17 and Wyoming 24-3 at home. It lost 23-0 to San Diego State and 28-17 to Utah State.

This season it beat Sacramento State 49-3 on 12 September and Rice 38-24 on 26 September. ESPN counts Sacramento State as an FBS team, so the method does too. That 46-point win is the largest result in either sample. Without it, Fresno State’s other six home games average a 5.3-point win, and our number would be Fresno State by 3.0.

Boise State on the road

Boise State’s road sample splits evenly, four wins and four losses, and the losses were 6 points bigger in total.

The losses were heavy: 34-7 at South Florida, 28-7 at Notre Dame and 17-7 at San Diego State in 2025, and 34-27 at Oregon on 5 September. The wins in 2025 were 49-37 at Air Force, 24-3 at Nevada and 25-24 at Utah State. This season it won 32-7 at Western Michigan on 26 September.

Two of the four road wins came by 12 points or fewer. Three of the four losses came by 10 or more.

The last meeting

Fresno State won 30-7 at Boise State on 1 November 2025. That was a Boise State home game, so it sits in neither sample. It is the only meeting between the two in 2025 and 2026.

2026 so far

Boise State is 3-1 and has won three in a row. It has scored 33.8 points a game and allowed 21.2. The run is 38-20 over Memphis, 38-24 over South Dakota, a team outside the FBS, and the win at Western Michigan. The loss was the opener at Oregon.

Fresno State is also 3-1 with three straight wins. It scored 28.2 a game and allowed 19.0, all against FBS teams. It opened with a 39-0 loss at USC on 4 September, then won 26-10 at San José State on 19 September between its two home wins. Neither team has played a Pac-12 game yet.

Last season

Boise State went 9-5 in 2025 and won by 5.8 points a game, and ended with a 38-10 loss to Washington on 13 December at a neutral site. Fresno State went 9-4 and won by 7.0 a game. It ended with an 18-3 win over Miami (OH) on 27 December, also at a neutral site.

ESPN’s FPI gives Boise State a 76.7% chance to win. That is the opposite side from our number, and by a lot. If the line opens with Fresno State as an underdog, Fresno State is a bet by our rule.
