Coastal Carolina at Marshall Best Pick, Prediction and Odds
Our number has Marshall by 8.4. No line yet: Marshall is a bet at -5 or shorter, Coastal Carolina at +11.5 or more.
No spread had been posted for this game as of 28 September 2026. Our number is Marshall by 8.4, and a side becomes a bet when the spread sits at least 3 points away from it. Until there is a price, the call is the range.
How the number is built
The method is one clause: our number is half the difference between the home team’s average margin at home and the visitor’s average margin on the road, against FBS teams only, 2025 and 2026 together.
Marshall is 3-3 at home against FBS teams over that span, winning by 1.8 points a game across 6 games. Coastal Carolina is 2-6 on the road against FBS teams, losing by 14.9 a game across 8 games. The difference is 16.7 points. Half of it, rounded, is 8.4.
That is 14 games, split 6 and 8. Both clear the 4-game minimum, and neither is large.
Coastal Carolina on the road
Three results drive this sample. In 2025 Coastal Carolina lost 48-7 at Virginia, 47-7 at Old Dominion and 51-7 at South Carolina. Each of those was a loss by 40 or more.
The other five road games were close or better. It won 38-20 at South Alabama and 45-37 at App State in 2025, and lost 45-40 at Georgia Southern. This season it lost 31-24 at West Virginia on 5 September and 22-14 at Delaware on 19 September.
Take out the three heavy losses and the other five average a 1.2-point win. On that basis our number would be Marshall by 0.3. The method counts every game, so it stays at 8.4, but the call rests on those three results more than on anything else.
Marshall at home
Marshall’s home sample is almost flat. In 2025 it beat Old Dominion 48-24 and Texas State 40-37, and lost 21-20 to Missouri State, 35-23 to James Madison and 24-19 to Georgia Southern.
The one 2026 home game against an FBS team was a 28-26 win over Middle Tennessee on 12 September. Four of the six home games were decided by 5 points or fewer.
The last meeting
Coastal Carolina won 44-27 at home on 30 October 2025. It was a Coastal Carolina home game, so the method does not use it.
2026 so far
Marshall is 3-1 and has won three in a row, scoring 23.5 points a game and allowing 32.5. The loss was the opener, 45-0 at Penn State. It won 30-24 at Missouri State on 19 September and beat Gardner-Webb 36-35, a team outside the FBS, on 26 September.
Coastal Carolina is 1-3, scoring 25.0 and allowing 23.5. Its win was 45-7 over Fordham, also outside the FBS. It lost 34-17 at home to Liberty on 24 September. Neither team has played a Sun Belt game yet.
Last season
Marshall went 5-7 in 2025 and won by 0.5 points a game. Coastal Carolina went 6-7 and was outscored by 10.9, and ended with a 23-14 loss to Louisiana Tech on 30 December at a neutral site.
ESPN’s FPI makes this close to even, with Marshall at 52.8%. Our number is Marshall by 8.4. The two disagree, and it is our number that makes the call.
Pick: no bet until a line is posted
Our number is Marshall by 8.4, and the threshold is 3 points.
Marshall becomes the bet at -5 or shorter, or as an underdog. At -5 the gap is 3.4. At -5.5 it is 2.9, a pass. Coastal Carolina becomes the bet at +11.5 or more, a gap of 3.1. At +11 the gap is 2.6.
Any line from Marshall -5.5 to -11 is no bet.
What changes it
The line, first. This page is re-read the week of the game.
The three 40-point road losses, second. They are all from 2025. If Coastal Carolina plays another road game against an FBS team before 10 October, it goes into the average, and with 8 games in the sample it can move our number by more than a point.
Availability is the third, and this page does not state it. Check the injury report before you bet.
