Old Dominion at App State Best Pick, Prediction and Odds
Our number has App State by 1.2. No line yet: App State is a bet only as an underdog of 2 or more, Old Dominion at +4.5 or more.
No spread had been posted for this game as of 29 September 2026. Our number has the home team, App State, winning by 1.2. A side becomes a bet when the spread sits at least 3 points away from that. Until there is a price, the call is the range.
How the number is built
The method is one clause: our number is half the difference between the home team’s average margin at home and the visitor’s average margin on the road, against FBS teams only, 2025 and 2026 together.
App State is 3-3 at home against FBS teams over that span, and its average margin there is exactly 0.0 across 6 games. Old Dominion is 3-4 on the road against FBS teams, losing by 2.4 a game across 7 games. The difference is 2.4 points. Half of it is 1.2.
That is 13 games, 6 and 7. Both clear the 4-game minimum.
App State at home
Every one of App State’s six home games against FBS teams was decided by 8 points or fewer. In 2025 it beat Oregon State 27-23 and Marshall 26-24, and lost 45-37 to Coastal Carolina, 25-23 to Georgia Southern and 30-29 to Arkansas State.
The one 2026 home game against an FBS team was a 26-21 win over Charlotte on 19 September. Add the six up and App State scored exactly as many points at home as it allowed. Close games make a small number, and a small number is what we have.
Old Dominion on the road
Old Dominion’s road results are the opposite shape: wide in both directions. In 2025 it won 45-26 at Virginia Tech, 31-6 at UL Monroe and 45-10 at Georgia Southern. It lost 27-14 at Indiana, 48-24 at Marshall and 63-27 at James Madison.
The one 2026 road game was a 44-21 loss at Virginia Tech on 12 September. All seven road games were decided by 13 points or more, so the 2.4-point average sits between results that were never close to it.
The last meeting
Old Dominion won 24-21 at home on 25 October 2025. It was an Old Dominion home game, so it sits in neither sample.
2026 so far
Old Dominion is 1-3 and has scored 22.2 points a game while allowing 30.0. Its win was 31-10 over Norfolk State, outside the FBS. Against its three FBS opponents it is 0-3, scoring 19.3 and allowing 36.7. That includes a 20-17 home loss to East Carolina and a 46-20 home loss to James Madison on 26 September. It is 0-1 in the Sun Belt.
App State is 3-1 and has scored 34.8 while allowing 22.2. Against three FBS opponents it went 2-1: 27-24 at East Carolina, 26-21 over Charlotte, then a 41-31 loss at NC State on 26 September. It has not played a Sun Belt game yet.
Last season

App State went 5-8 and lost by 5.6 a game, ending with a 29-10 loss to Georgia Southern on 29 December, also at a neutral site.
ESPN’s FPI gives App State a 71.7% chance to win. Our number leans the same way, by less.
Pick: no bet until a line is posted
Our number is App State by 1.2, and the threshold is 3 points.
App State becomes the bet only as an underdog: at +2 the gap is 3.2. At +1.5 it is 2.7, a pass.
Old Dominion becomes the bet at +4.5 or more, where the gap is 3.3. At +4 it is 2.8. Any line from App State -4 to App State +1.5 is no bet, and that includes pick’em.
What changes it
The line, first. This page is re-read the week of the game.
Old Dominion’s road sample, second. It plays at Georgia State on 3 October, and that result goes into the average. With 7 games in the sample, one result can move our number by more than a point. App State has no game between now and 10 October, so its side stays as it is.
Availability is the third, and this page does not state it. Check the injury report before you bet.
