Some BIG news dropped in the world of professional golf a few weeks ago. It was announced that the European Tour is officially changing its name to the DP World Tour as part of a rebranding effort. With the name change come some BIG changes in the purse money available for the Tour overall and individual events.
Prize money is expected to double under the new deal with DP World which is a Dubai-based logistics company. The company has sponsored the season-ending event often known as “The Race to Dubai” on the European Tour since 2009. But, to be clear, the “Race to Dubai” is made up of the tournaments leading up to the season-ending DP World Tour Championship, in Dubai which takes place at the Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
According to Keith Pelly, European Tour chief executive, price money under the new agreement will hit the $200 million mark with individual event money increasing to a minimum of $2 million. Pelly also noted that the old name of “European Tour” has long been a misnomer with only 23 of the tour’s 47 events being played on European soil.
“We are definitely a world tour,” said Pelly. “We will always remember our heritage,” Pelley added, “and those who have gone before us who helped us shape our tour … but we also rejoice in our global footprint.”
This is good news for a Tour that was hit hard by Covid-19. Travel restrictions between the countries that hosted DP World Tour events varied making it hard, if not impossible, for many regular Tour members to make it to all of the events they wanted to play. Not to mention the shutdowns to the schedule due to the pandemic. Now, with solid financial backing, the Race to Dubai is looking even greener – at least when it comes to purse money.
2022 Race to Dubai Futures Betting
Speaking of the 2022 Race to Dubai Championship, let’s get things rolling early with some early predictions! We can start to analyze some futures on the event and see where some of the players are currently riding the list according to oddsmakers. As can be expected, Jon Rahm is the frontrunner to win the with Rory McIlroy in a near dead-heat.
Jon Rahm +350
Rory McIlroy +400
Collin Morikawa +600
Viktor Hovland +800
2022 Race to Dubai Predictions
The Favorite: Jon Rahm +350
This one is obvious. Jon Rahm capped off his 2021 season by becoming the first Spanish-born golfer to win the U.S. Open. Then, he almost won the Open Championship – aka the British Open – but finished T3. The player sometimes called “Rahmbo” should be in the same form in 2022 as he was last season. He’s already won 6 times on the PGA Tour and 7 times on the DP World Tour. The former Arizona State player is still only 27 years old. And, he’s a former Race to Dubai winner as he won the Championship in 2019.
Don’t Count Out Pick: Tommy Fleetwood +2500
Tommy Fleetwood has had some struggles on the PGA Tour during the Covid seasons and even lost his Tour Card. No worries, due to his record and status, you’ll still see him during PGA Events. But, his bread and butter events in 2022 will be on the DP World Tour. Fleetwood won the Championship in Dubai in 2017 and has been a fantastic ambassador for the European, now DP World, Tour. He has 8 professional wins with 5 of them coming on the DP World Tour. He finished 2nd at the 2019 Open Championship.
My Dark Horse Pick: Sergio Garcia +8000
It may be strange to list a player like Sergio Garcia as a dark horse pick. But, is getting older… but he’s still playing strong. Garcia has 36 professional wins on his resume with 11 of them on the PGA Tour and 16 coming from the DP World Tour. He won the Masters in 2017, was 2nd and T2 at the PGA Championship in 1999 and 2008, and finished T2 at the 2014 Open Championship.
Others: I want to take Rory McIlroy (+400) but I am waiting to see how he gets going at the start of the season. The same goes with Will Zalatoris (+6000).
