Entering the final week of regular season play, Texas State remains atop the Sun Belt. The Bobcats went 12-3 last year but got knocked out of the conference tournament in the quarterfinals. They finished 12-3 again and will be the No. 1 seed when the tournament begins on Mar. 3.
Can the Bobcats avenge last year’s early exit? Which Sun Belt team could surprise? Here’s a look at the 2022 Sun Belt Conference tournament odds and picks.
Bobcats Favored
As mentioned, Texas State is the overall favorite to win the tournament title and the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament that comes with it. The Bobcats are listed at +275.
Texas State is 19-6 overall and has plenty of experience. Senior guard Cade Asberry leads the team in scoring averaging 13.4 points a game. Seniors Mason Harrell and Isiah Small both average over 11 points a game.
The Bobcats beat its biggest challenger, Appalachian State, 68-66 earlier this season. If they can avoid the upset, the Sun Belt title awaits.
Top Contenders
Last year, Appalachian State went on a run at the right time. The Mountaineers won the conference tournament and earned the automatic NCAA bid. They are 11-5 in the conference this year (17-12 overall) and have a legitimate shot of winning the conference tournament again.
Georgia State (15-10, 9-5) is another contender that has battled injuries and COVID all season. After a 0- 4 start in conference play, the Panthers have won seven of eight. They are given +350 odds to win after making the championship game last season.
The Panthers are no strangers to success in the Sun Belt. Georgia State has won four of the previous six conference titles. They are led by a trio of senior guards – Kane Williams, Corey Allen, and Justin Roberts.
The Sleeper
If there is a team to watch in the Sun Belt Tournament, it’s Troy. The Trojans were picked to finish among the worst teams in the conference in the preseason. They turned out to be one of the best.
Troy is 18-9 overall and 9-5 in conference play. Sitting fourth in the conference standings, Troy has wins over the top three teams (Texas State, Appalachian State, and Georgia State) in the conference including a pair of wins over the Mountaineers.
2022 Sun Belt Conference Tournament Prediction
It’s easy to look at Texas State and believe they can win the Sun Belt tournament, but what wins at this time of year is experience. Having been there before goes a long way when it comes to big games like these.
It’s almost as easy to overlook Georgia State this season. The Panthers had a stretch this season where they won just two of ten games. During that stretch, they also had five games cancelled. Now that their lineup is healthy, Georgia State has won its last seven games in a row. One of those wins was over Appalachian State.
With their experience and the fact they have won four of the last six Sun Belt Conference tournaments, this year’s pick in Georgia State at +350.
