PGA: 2021 British Open Championship Odds and Picks

The tournament known as “The Open” is picking back up after being canceled last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event, which is often called the British Open here in the states, is set to tee off at Royal St George’s Golf Club in Sandwich, England with one player riding the top of the favorites list.

John Rahm comes in as the lone favorite at +650 following a 7th place run last week at the Scottish Open and a win at the U.S. Open a few weeks ago. Rahm has one missed cut this season and a withdrawal from the Travelers due to a positive COVID test following the 3rd round where he was the leader.

Rory McIlroy is next on the favorites list at +1400 following a missed cut at the Scottish Open. After McIlroy, the field turns into a whole bunch of players knotted together at different numbers which signal that the field could be open to a surprise winner if Rahm stumbles.

Here are the favorites through +1800 to win the 2021 Open Championship outright according to Intertops.

Jon Rahm +650

Rory McIlroy +1400

Dustin Johnson +1600

Brooks Koepka +1600

Justin Thomas +1800

Xander Schauffele +1800

Jordan Spieth +1800

So far, more than ten players have withdrawn due to several reasons including positive COVID tests as well as exposure protocols. Players that have withdrawn include former Open Championship winner Zach Johnson, reigning Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama, Bubba Watson, Matthew Wolff, and others.

Most Popular Ways to Bet on Golf

If you watch the PGA being played on courses in the states then get ready for a big change. Royal St George’s Golf Club is an oceanside course with light rolling terrain, no trees, deep grassy roughs, mist, and steady blowing winds.

The course is a classic set of links that requires plenty of ball control while having the ability to play under the wind. Players that hit towering tee shots may find themselves struggling if the weather makes a turn for the worse.

The forecast is calling for blustery days for the opening rounds with rain with things settling down for the weekend. But, as with all seaside venues – that’s subject to change.

Royal St George’s Golf Club has hosted the Open Championship 14 times in the past starting in 1894. The last time was in 2011 when Darren Clarke beat Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson for the win.

Tips for Betting on the British Open

2021 British Open Predictions

Jon Rahm +650

Jon Rahm is the favorite because he’s the golfer that seems to be hitting on all cylinders at the current time. He’s coming off a U.S. Open win following a forced COVID withdrawal where he was leading the field after three rounds. He’s familiar with the European style of play on these types of courses and should be able to play solid rounds. Look for him to start things off by going low off the tee with power.

Louis Oosthuizen +2800

Louis Oosthuizen is entering the Open Championship with a hot putter which could speak volumes this week. The greens are somewhat straightforward with a few drops and rolls – but none of the trickery of multiple terraces. He’s also great around the greens coming in at No. 1 for scrambling around the green from 20-30 yards according to PGA stats.

Harris English +7000

Harris English won an exciting eight-hole playoff a couple of weeks ago by remaining calm and sticking with his game – which has been on point! He’s won twice this season and finished 3 rd at the U.S. Open. English has a strong game going right now and his ability to stay calm will be a big plus on a course that can get tricky at any moment.

Others: Jordan Speith (+1800) is playing well and can fire up a bump and run style course. However, at +1800 he may not be the best value. Shane Lowry is the defending Open champ and a good value at +3500. He has had to wait almost two years to defend his Open win. He’s been knocking down top ten finishes all season and could light up the Open field once again.
