2021 British Open Picks to Finish in the Top 10

Professional golf’s final Major of the year gets underway this week with Thursday’s first round of the 2021 Open Championship at Royal St. George’s Golf Club in Kent, England.

Also known as the British Open, this event has been two years in the making after last year’s tournament was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

PGA Betting Sites

Betting on the outright winner of a PGA tournament, let alone a Major, is a low probability proposition. When all the best golfers in the world are in the field, anything can happen over the span of four rounds.

A much easier bet to cash involves the posted futures odds for a Top 10 finish. You can go chalk on the favorites and still earn a solid return on investment.

Rahm Favored in British Open Betting Markets

For example, US Open winner Jon Rahm has been opened as a +800 favorite to win another Major this week. His betting odds to finish inside the Top 10 are set at -110. I higher value wager could be his +188 odds for a Top Five finish in this tournament.

Xander Schauffele has elevated his game to the ranks of a top Open Championship contender at +1800 odds. He is definitely a value bet at +175 odds to place inside the Top 10 at Royal St. George’s.

My top-valued play among the upper tier of contenders this week is Brooks Koepka as one of the most consistent golfers when it comes to Majors. His odds to win are +1850 but his best value is at +188 for a Top 10 finish.

Value Picks to Finish Top 10 at the British Open

Moving down the list in search of value in the Top 10 odds, Louis Oosthuizen stands out with +225 odds. He placed second to Rahm in last month’s US Open at Torrey Pines. He should remain near the top of the leaderboard again this week given his current form.

Bryson DeChambeau has turned into a crowd favorite but I see him as overvalued for a Top 10 finish at +300. His fourth-round collapse in the US Open could haunt him this week from across the pond.

A better choice at longer odds would be Collin Morikawa. The 2020 PGA Championship winner posted an eighth-place finish in that Major this year. He went on to tie for fourth in the US Open. This will be his first career appearance in the Open Championship, so betting his +275 odds for a Top 10 run comes with a certain level of risk.

The fact he posted a less than stellar performance in this past week’s Scottish Open can be taken either way. Maybe he will continue to struggle at Royal St. George’s this week or maybe his slide to 71 st place will actually work in his favor.

The last time this tournament was played it took place at Royal Portrush Golf Club in July of 2019. Shane Lowry bested the field at -15 under par over the course of four rounds of play. His odds to win this week are set at +4550. He would have to be considered another value play for a Top 10 run at +350 betting odds.
