With ten games on the schedule tonight, a number of underdogs are looking to pull upsets. For the season, home and away underdogs are about even winning roughly 35 percent of the time.
Over the past month though, it’s been the road underdog that has had more success winning 40 percent of the time. There is at least one road dog among the best NHL underdog picks for Thursday, February 17, 2022. Here’s a look at them.
Boston Bruins vs. NY Islanders
PICK: BRUINS +110
Boston is just 1-3 since the All-Star break. The lone win came over Ottawa which is just 17-25-4 this season. The Bruins are an underdog heading into tonight’s game against the Islanders.
New York is just 1-5 since the break, but they have won their last four straight against the Bruins. That includes a 3-1 win at home back in December.
Brad Marchand is out for Boston, but Patrice Bergeron should play. Boston has won 11 of its last 16 games on the road.
The big news for the Islanders is that goalie Semyon Varlamov is out due to COVID quarantine. That will be the difference as the Bruins pull the upset.
Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Toronto Maple Leafs
PICK: PENGUINS +120
The Penguins have won four straight since the All-Star break and have taken over the lead in the Metropolitan Division with a 31-11-8 record. Sidney Crosby scored his 500th career goal as the Pens rallied and beat in-state rival Philadelphia 5-4 on Tuesday night.
The Over has hit in four of Pittsburgh’s last six games. In their four-game win streak, the Pens have scored a total of 15 goals. The Pens also have won the last two against the Maple Leafs, including a 2-0 win in Toronto back in November.
Pittsburgh has won four of the last five against Toronto and has won each of its last six games on the road. They are 7-5-2 as an underdog. Pens get the road win.
Vancouver Canucks vs. San Jose Sharks
PICK: SHARKS +100
The Sharks have been navigating a tough stretch recently. They have won just once in their last seven games and once in their last four games at home. The Sharks are just 1-5 against the Canucks in the six games, but tonight the tide changes.
San Jose is 8-3 straight up in the 11 games they have played against Vancouver at home. Quinn Hughes, the Canucks second-leading scorer (34 pts) will be out due to quarantine. That will hurt.
The Sharks have lost four straight and have played just one game since Feb. 1. They lost to Edmonton 3-0 on Monday night. They are due for a win against a team they have had success with at home.
Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Chicago Blackhawks
PICK: BLUE JACKETS +125
Columbus is 3-1 since the All-Star break and faces a Chicago team that is just 2-2. Both teams ranks in the top ten in goals allowed per game.
The Blue Jackets actually have the better overall record, but the Blackhawks are favored primarily because they are playing at home. Columbus is 5-2 in its last seven games while the Blackhawks are just 3-8 in their last 11. The hotter team prevails tonight.
