The WNBA follows-up this week’s annual All-Star Game with a month-long break for the Summer Olympics. The extended break should make things rather interesting when the league resumes play later in August for the 2021 championship run.
Turning to the WNBA betting futures to win this year’s title, it appears to be a two-team race between the Las Vegas Aces as +200 favorites and the Seattle Storm as defending champions with +225 odds.
Las Vegas and Seattle Are the Top Contenders
These have been the two best WNBA teams all season long. Heading into the break, Las Vegas (15-6) is a game behind the Storm (16-5) in the Western Conference standings. The two teams have faced one another three times this season with the Aces winning two of three straight-up.
Checking the player stats page, A’ja Wilson has been the leading scorer for Las Vegas with an average of 19.4 points per game. Seattle’s Breanna Stewart is third in the WNBA in scoring with 20.6 PPG.
The Aces are averaging 90.7 points a game while holding their opponents to 80.9 PPG at the other end of the court. The Storm are the second-highest scoring team in the league (86.4 points) and second in the WNBA in points allowed (79.7).
Betting the futures odds to win this year’s championship (What Is a Futures Bet?), Seattle appears to be the value pick at +225 but my lean is still towards Las Vegas as the better all-around team. The month layoff could impact the seeding in the final standings. Yet, in a head-to-head matchup in the postseason, I give the slight edge to the Aces. They have the necessary depth to avenge last season’s sweep at the hand of Seattle when they most likely meet again.
Any Value Betting Any Other Teams?
After Las Vegas and Seattle as the frontrunners, you could look at the Connecticut Sun as a value play at +475 betting odds. They lead the Eastern Conference at the break with a 14-6 record through 20 games. With a four-game lead in the standings on the strength of an 8-1 record at home, the Sun would gain a big advantage with home court in the playoffs.
Behind the play of MVP candidate Jonquel Jones, this might be the only other WNBA team that can hang with Las Vegas or Seattle in a postseason showdown. Paired with Brionna Jones and DeWanna Bonner, betting on the Sun’s Big Three is worth a small futures play.
The odds go to +650 for the Chicago Sky as the next team on the list. At an even 10-10 on the year, the gap behind Connecticut remains rather wide in the East. The break could shake things up over the second half but the Sky are a reach at best as a legitimate WNBA championship contender.
Give credit to the Minnesota Lynx for posting a SU seven-game winning streak to close out the first half. Taking the next month off for the Summer Games is a bad break for a team that was building some solid momentum for a second-half run. This drains most of the value in their +1000 odds.
Since they are only three games out of first in the West at 12-7, the Lynx are still a team to watch once play resumes in August.
The other seven teams are more than a reach to make a run at a title. I still see Las Vegas as the team to beat with a solid +200 return in the Aces’ betting odds.
