When it comes to Major League Baseball, betting opportunities abound because of the number of games played in a season.
Sure, one-day things can look great for one team, but the same team will have issues finding success beyond it. The nice thing about all of the games MLB teams play in a season is that leaves plenty of games to find value in underdogs.
Here’s a look at a few underdogs who may be worth betting Wednesday night.
Cleveland Guardians vs. Boston Red Sox
Best Bet: Guardians +116
Being the Boston Red Sox has to be difficult right now. At one point in June, the Red Sox looked like they may be able to be a factor in the American League East race. Now the Red Sox are mired in the basement and have seen the Baltimore Orioles pass them by in the standings.
Boston’s opponent Wednesday, the Cleveland Guardians, won’t have a lack of confidence Boston may be cycling through right now. The Guardians may not be a team many believe can win the World Series, but Cleveland only sits 2.5 games out of the league in the American League Central Division.
The Guardians will be facing Red Sox pitcher Nathan Eovaldi coming off one of his worst efforts as a pro. Eovaldi was chased after 2.2 innings when he allowed nine runs last Friday in a game Boston lost 28-5 to the Toronto Blue Jays. Cleveland, meanwhile, will have Cal Quantrill on the mound.
Quantrill is 7-5 this season with a 3.75 ERA.
Tampa Bay Rays vs. Baltimore Orioles
Best Bet: Orioles +100
The Orioles have taken everyone by surprise by surging in the standings and passing Boston up for a fourth place in the AL East. Baltimore has even taken advantage of Tampa Bay, winning the first two games of their series. The Rays have now lost four straight and only hold a three-game edge over Baltimore for third place.
Orioles pitcher Tyler Wells has lost his past two starts, but Baltimore has previously won the seven games he started before that. Wells is 7-6 on the season with a 3.69 ERA.
Drew Rasmussen will be on the hill for Tampa Bay. Rasmussen is 6-3 this season with a 3.13 ERA.
Miami Marlins vs. Cincinnati Reds
Best Bet: Marlins +138
The Miami Marlins are in a surge of a jolt offensively. Even when they win recently, Miami has had to do so by being creative in how they score runs.
The Marlins beat the Reds Tuesday night but were only able to produce two runs. During July, Miami went through a 37-inning stretch where it didn’t score a run at all.
Playing at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati Wednesday provides the Marlins with opportunities to send some fly balls over the fence in a hitter-friendly park. Miami ranks 20th in the MLB in home runs, having hit 92 this season. The Reds are sending Luis Casillo to the mound.
Castillo, an All-Star, has been excellent this season on the mound but has had a few rough patches, including a stretch in June where he allowed three or more runs per game. If Miami can find a way to chase Castillo early, the Marlins could be set up to grab a victory.
