Time to head South of the border for the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba – formerly known as the Mayakoba Golf Classic. And hopefully, some warm temps! The event started in 2007 as an alternative tournament on the schedule but that has changed dramatically.
It’s been a stand-alone since 2015 complete with an invitation to the Masters in Augusta complete with FedEx points. You have to love when a so-so date on the schedule grows from an alternative event to a full Tour stop with a strong field and new title sponsors. That’s what the former Mayakoba Golf Classic has done in only a few short years.
Viktor Hovland is returning to defend his win from last season at Mayakoba and he’ll have several heavy hitters to fend off including Brooks Koepka and Justin Thomas. Others in the field include Abraham Ancer, Tony Finau, and Scottie Scheffler.
This is an opportunity for some of the bigger names on the Tour to pick up some points and a win. And, that same opportunity is wide open to a host of players that can still take advantage of a field that may be top-heavy but not packed with depth. This is a tournament where a player from well below the typical leaders can jump up and grab a win.
Here are the favorites coming in at +2200 and under to win the 2021 World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba outright according to Intertops.

2021 Worldwide Technology Championship Preview
Where: Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mexico.
Course: El Camaleon Golf Club
Par: 71
Length: 7,017
When: November 4-7, 2021
Purse: $7.2 million
TV Coverage: NBC, Golf Channel
Greg Norman designed this course and he packed it with doglegs and protected landing areas. While the course is short, by PGA Tour standards, it can play like a long European-style venue due to ocean wind. If winds become an issue you can expect players with a touch for long irons to try and go as low as possible off the tee.
Most players will look to shave strokes off some of the shorter par-5 and par-4 holes in a tournament that’s known for being drama-packed on Sunday. The Mayakoba seems to end with a playoff, or one-stroke finish, much of the time.
This is an amazing venue for TV. The course wanders through tropical landscapes, mango groves, and oceanside vistas. Greens tend to run quickly on the Paspalum grass, there are 35 well-placed bunkers on the course and 10 holes where water comes into play.
2021 World Wide Technology Predictions
Abraham Ancer +2000
Abraham Ancer would love to get this win. This is his 7th appearance at this event and sealing the victory would go a long way towards FedEx Cup efforts later in the season. The University of Oklahoma alumn has a scoring average of 67.75 which fares well for this course. He finished T9 at the Tour Championship.
Aaron Wise +3300
Aaron Wise finished strong last year at Mayakoba. He carded a 2nd place finish with solid 3rd and 4th rounds with a strong short game and a dependable putter. Back in 2018, he finished T18 at Mayakoba. Wise is coming off of two nice Vegas events where he finished T8 and the T5.
Rickie Fowler +4000
Rickie Fowler may be the dark horse pick of the tournament. Even though he has been inconsistent over the last season, he’s still a threat when it comes to scrambling. If Fowler can get his putter going while being safe off the tee he could carve up Mayakoba.
Others: Viktor Hovland (+1600) is looking to defend his title. He seems a little tired after a workhorse schedule all of last season but should always be considered a threat. Brooks Koepka (+2800) has not been the same player that he was a few seasons ago. He’s still recovering from knee surgery that was much more severe than many initially thought. The good news is that he was a strong member of the Ryder Cup team which could kick-start his efforts.
