The 2022 Genesis Invitational is back to its regular select 120 player field following the limited edition due to Covid-19. As always, the field is strong with plenty of top-ranked players getting ready to compete at the Riviera Country Club at Pacific Palisades, California starting with Jon Rahm and Patrick Cantlay.
Rahm comes in as the lone favorite at +800 with Cantlay at +1100 heading into the opening round on Thursday. Rahm finished last week’s rowdy Phoenix Open with a T10 on the tournament. Cantlay finished 2nd at Phoenix behind Scottie Scheffler as the two players battled at the end in a playoff.
Speaking of playoffs, this event also finished in the same way last season! In 2021, it was Max Homa beating Tony Finau in a playoff for the Genesis win. Oddsmakers see the two as near equals again this year at the Genesis as Homa comes in at +4500 while Tony Finau is at +5000. This field is packed with plenty of value picks – as is the nature of invitational style fields.
Here are the top contenders to win the 2022 Genesis Invitational outright.
Jon Rahm +800
Patrick Cantlay +1100
Justin Thomas +1400
Dustin Johnson +1600
Rory McIlroy +1800

This is a venue that forces players to dig into their bags for the right clubs. The Riviera Country Club does not have any “gimmie” holes! Everything is protected by trees lining fairways to surgically placed bunkers. There are only a few places on the course where strokes can be easily made up and No. 4 is not one of them.
Ben Hogan famously called the Par-three No. 4 hole “the greatest par-three in America.” They now have a plaque to commemorate Hogan’s comment as the green is protected by rolling terrain, roughs, and ball swallowing bunkers. Getting away with par is a plus!
The course plays into a small canyon area giving several holes natural outcroppings along the fairways. Many of the greens are raised which always forces players to have command of their short game. Strong putters will be needed as many of the greens have fall-away areas which could cause some awkward rolls past the hole.
2022 Genesis Invitational Picks
Patrick Cantlay +1100
Patrick Cantlay came in 2nd last week at the Phoenix Open after a playoff loss to Scottie Scheffler. That second-place effort gives him five consecutive tournaments, including a win at the Ryder Cup, with a 9th or better finishes. Here’s how it breaks down over his last 5 outings; 2nd, T4, 9th, 4th, and 1st. Any way you slice it, that’s some strong golf!
Hideki Matsuyama +2200
Hideki Matsuyama is the leader in FedEx points and is now ranked 10th in the OWGR rankings. He won the Sony Open and the ZOZO Championship so far in this new 20221-2022 season. Last week he was one of the contenders for the win before finishing a strong T8 at the Phoenix Open. He has three top 10s and a T11 at the Riviera Country Club.
Bubba Watson +4000
Bubba Watson has not played any PGA Tour events since the QBE Shootout back in December where he finished T9. That’s except for his return to the schedule last week in Scottsdale where he finished T14. However, he has been playing golf including a 2nd place finish at the Saudi Invitational. Watson has won the Genesis Open three times.
Others: Viktor Hovland (+2500) did not have the best outing last week but he scored a T5 here last season. Luke List (+7500) finally followed through and got his first PGA Tour win a few weeks ago. List has a great short game going and that is always a plus at Riviera.
