2022 Masters Odds, Picks and Preview

Tiger Woods is going to try and play in the 2022 Masters Tournament. Does that make him the automatic favorite to win following over a year of recovery following his car wreck? Maybe for sentimental people – but the lone favorite heading into the opening round is Jon Rahm at +1000. Woods comes in further down the list at +6000.

Rahm finished 4th at the Masters 2018 and has been one of the favorites for almost every event this season. So far this year he’s not taken home a win but he has finished well several times this season. Rahm is in a tight group of favorites including one past winner of the Masters Tournament.

Where to Bet on the Masters

Dustin Johnson comes in at +1600 before the opening round tees off on Thursday. Johnson won the 2020 Masters by beating Sung-Jae Im and Cameron Smith by five strokes. Last year the tournament was won by Hideki Matsuyama who comes in at +4000.

There are traditionally around 100 players. The Masters is an invitational event limited to the top 50 ranked golfers, past Masters winners, and winners of select tournaments with a few other selections added in. That means almost every player has a chance of winning this tournament!

Here are the top-five favorites to win the 2022 Masters outright:

Jon Rahm +1000

Justin Thomas +1200

Cameron Smith +1400

Scottie Scheffler +1400

Dustin Johnson +1600

As for Tiger Woods! Let the excitement start. The legendary player, and five-time Masters winner, spoke to the media during a Tuesday morning press conference. He confirmed that he felt like he could give it a try following some practice on the course. There is a very, very, very slight chance he could withdraw. Which would be completely understandable. But, he was very clear about his intentions to play.

“I don’t show up unless I think I can win,” said Woods. “I love competing and I feel like if I can still compete at the highest level, I’m going to. And if I feel I can still win, I’m going to play. But if I feel like I can’t, then you won’t see me out here.”

By all published accounts, the famed Augusta National course will be in pristine form when the opening round of the 2022 Masters tee up this week. Most die-hard golf fans already know every hole by heart so the amount of information to add here is minor. The biggest thing to make note of is that some additional distance has been added to both the 11th and 15th holes.

Players will simply have to adjust slightly, maybe give a second thought to club choices. But all of that will be worked out during practice rounds. It may pop up during the tournament, but don’t expect it to make much of a difference. Also, several trees have been removed and a few tweaks to fairways – again on the 11th hole.

Remember Tiger Woods and his famous 2nd shot from the pine straw on Eleven? That bend in the fairway and area of pine straw is a thing of the past. That made for more room in the landing area due to the lengthening of the hole.

And, by now, most players are familiar with the way greens at Augusta firm up during the day. The course’s greens are maintained in a way to try to ensure a hard and fast putting surface. This is done with the help of an underground irrigation/ventilation system known as the SubAir System.

The weather looks good for the Masters as rain is expected in the area just before the opening round with clear skies for all four rounds. Temperatures will be a bit chilly this year. Look for a range from the low 40s in the mornings to the low 70s Thursday and Sunday with mid-60s on Friday and Saturday.

2022 Masters Predictions

Justin Thomas +1200

Justin Thomas placed a solo fourth during the 2020 Masters and was 24th in 2021. In 2019 he finished T12 at Augusta. He seems to always be near the top at Augusta National and he’s always around on Saturday and Sunday during the Masters. This season Thomas already has moved to the 7th spot in the World Rankings and is 14th in FedEx points. He’s finished T8 or better six times this season.

Dustin Johnson +1600

Dustin Johnson won the Masters two years ago and slid down the leaderboard at the end during his title defense last season. During his win, Johnson won the 2020 Masters by going 20 under and winning by five strokes over Im Sung-Jae and Cameron Smith. Johnson seems to have put any bumps in the road that occurred last year behind him. He comes in with solid play with his irons and no pressure of defending his title this year.

Sungjae Im +5000

Sungjae Im played great gold in the delayed Fall of 2020 Masters. The weather was cooler and Sungjae Im went toe-to-toe with Cameron Smith for the second-place spot as both players finished T2 behind winner Dustin Johnson. Im won the Shriners this season and has also posted a T6 and T8 so far this year.

Others I Like: The only reason I’m going with Jon Rahm is that he’s let me down a few times this season. I’ve faded on him the last two weeks. But he could always prove me wrong. And, yes – this weekend I will have something on Tiger Woods. He is a five-time Masters winner and the simple fact that he’s made it to this point after such a devastating injury proves he’s put some work in. Mentally, he must be on point. Hopefully, his body can keep up.
