2022 Oscars Predictions: Odds to Win Best Picture

The 94th Academy Awards presentation will take place on March 27, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. The awards show will honor the best films released between March 1 and December 31, 2021.

Where to Bet on the Oscars

Lists of films that will compete in ten different categories, including Best Picture, were announced on Dec. 21. Official nominations will be announced on Feb. 8.

Here’s a look at the 2022 Academy Awards Best Picture odds and predictions.

Three-Horse Race

It appears the Best Picture category will come down to three films released last year: The Power of the Dog, West Side Story, and Belfast.

The three top contenders are the only films given better than +1000 odds to win Best Picture. In fact, all three are listed between +150 and +225. Next on the board after the top three is the quirky Licorice Pizza at +1400.

The Power of the Dog by Jane Campion has a chance to win several awards including Best Picture and Kirsten Dunst for Best Supporting Actress. The film is the current overall favorite at +150.

West Side Story has a legendary Oscars history with the 1961 version winning 10 awards, including Best Picture. The 2021 version, done by the legendary Stephen Spielberg tanked at the box office grossing roughly $50 million on a budget of $100 million. Still, the film is second on the board for Best Picture at +200.

Right on its heels at +225 is Belfast, a semi-autobiographical film by Kenneth Branagh. It’s the story of a tight-knit Irish family in the 1960s. The film also did not do as well as projected at the box office, but some of that can be attributed to the coronavirus pandemic.

Best Sleepers to Win

Reinaldo Marcus Green’s King Richard, starring Will Smith as the father of Venus and Serena Williams, is listed at +1600 and would have been a huge box office hit in any other year.

The third adaption of Dune actually did very well at the box office. So far, the film has a worldwide gross of nearly $400 million. The pandemic actually postponed its release twice and puts it in this year’s race. Dune is listed at +1600.

If there is one film on the rise, it is probably Apple TV’s CODA. A young woman comes of age as the only hearing person in a deaf family. It’s an emotional work that tugs on viewer’s heart strings and makes it a valid longshot at +2500.

2022 Oscars Best Picture Pick

The last two Best Picture winners – Nomadland and Parasite – were popular within the Academy. Remember, it’s the Academy that votes. That includes actors, directors, producers, costume designers, etc. The average person that watches movies does not vote.

With that in mind, recall that last year Nomadland was a -670 favorite and won. While not as big of a favorite, The Power of the Dog looks as though it will take home several awards. Back it for Best Picture.
