The Valero Texas Open is next up for the PGA Tour and it’s the final tournament before the Masters. That means the field is a nice mix of top-players with plenty of value picks further down the odds list. As for the odds, they are topped by Rory McIlroy who comes in as +750 heading into Thursday’s opening round.
McIlroy took last weekend off and looks to get his form right for the Masters this week. He’s played well this season and now sits at 9th in the Official World Golf Rankings and is 26th in FedEx rankings.
The Valero Texas Open was won last year by Jordan Spieth who was chased by Charley Hoffman before winning by 2 strokes. Corry Conners won the tournament in 2019 as the tournament was skipped in 2020. Speith comes in at +1400 while Conners is at +1800. Like Speith, Connors bested Hoffman by two strokes for the win.
Here are the favorites to win the 2022 Valero Texas Open outright.
Rory McIlroy +750
Jordan Spieth +1400
Hideki Matsuyama +1800
Corey Conners +1800
Abraham Ancer +2200
Bryson DeChambeau +2200
This event has been won by one or two strokes going back ten tournaments to 2008. It eneded in a playoff in 2009 and only six times going back to 1991.
2022 Valero Texas Open Preview
Where: San Antonio, Texas
Course: TPC San Antonio – Oaks Course
Format: Stroke Play
Par: 72
Length: 7,435
When: March 31 – April 3, 2022
Purse: $8.6 Million.
TV Coverage: NBC/Golf
The Oaks was designed by Greg Norman and Sergio García. The look is traditional but has a open feeling for players and spectators. The fairways are a mix between tight tree-lined and wide open, all focusing on hitting second shot target areas that are protected by tall natural grass roughs.
That goes for the greens as well as many of them go from putting surface to traditional rough and then natural grass in only a few yards. A misplayed approach shot could be disastrous. Look for some elevated short iron play this week!
As for tee shots – the wind may be an issue for the first couple of days. This might elevate some scoring for the opening rounds and may make the cutline interesting. Errant tee shots will find deep outer roughs somewhere between 4-7 inches.
2022 Valero Texas Open Predictions
Corey Conners +1800
Corey Conners won this event in 2019 and has played well here over the years. He seems to have a knack for knowing how to play the wind at this course and is great at hitting fairways in the right spot. In his 2019 win he went 20-under with his two-stroke victory. You have to go back to 2003 to Tommy Armour III’s win of 26 under to beat Conners mark.
Bryson DeChambeau +2200
Bryson DeChambeau may not be the threat he was a few years ago due to some lingering injuries. But if he has his powerful driver on point he could play his tee shots below any wind issues. This course plays long in some places and opening shots will be a premium. It will be interesting to see how his wrist holds up heading into the Masters.
Ryan Palmer +6600
Ryan Palmer has scored four top ten and six top twenty finishes here so he knows this course! Palmer is not having any issues between the tee and the green this season. But he’ll need his putter to come alive to be at the front on Sunday. Palmer has had four rough outings with 3 cuts and a T70. Before that, he finished T11, T12, and T16.
Others I Like: Abraham Ancer (+2200) looked strong last week and has a solid game going. He should hit TPC San Antonio running. Luke List (+6600) has a win this season and is always a threat with his putter which is a high-value club at this course.
