We’re going to analyze the 2023 MLB stolen bases leader futures betting market.
There are numerous regular season player performance futures markets to bet on. We’ve already made 2023 MLB home run leader predictions and 2023 MLB strikeout leader predictions.
Today, we’re going to predict who will lead MLB in stolen bases during the 2023 regular season.
This season-long futures betting market should have some added interest this season, as one of the rule changes is that bases will now be bigger (18” by 18” instead of 15” by 15”).
Speedsters are going to be able to take bigger leads when on base and stealing will be easier.
Jon Berti of the Miami Marlins led the Majors in stolen bases (41) last season despite only playing in 102 games. There were five other players who had 30+ stolen bases last season. Those players are Jorge Mateo (35), Cedric Mullins (34), Randy Azorarena (32), Tommy Edman (32) and Bobby Witt Jr. (30).
2023 MLB Stolen Bases Leader Contenders
There are four players priced at less than 10/1 odds to have the most stolen bases in 2023.
Adalberto Mondesi (+500) leads the market. Mondesi has shown the ability to steal a lot of bases in the past, but he has dealt with injuries the last couple years and is still recovering currently.
Ronald Acuna Jr. (+600) finished 7th in the Majors last season in stolen bases (29). In 2019, he had 37 stolen bases in 156 games. If he plays 135+ games this season, he’ll be among the leaders.
Esteury Ruiz (+700) had a total of 86 stolen bases last season between AA, AAA and the Majors. He’ll be playing full-time for the Athletics this season. Ruiz has the speed to steal 50+ bases this season.
Cedric Mullins (+800) had 34 stolen bases last season in 156 games. Most of his numbers were down in 2022 compared to 2021 except for SBs. He’ll look to improve upon his 34 SBs in 2022 this season.
2023 MLB Stolen Bases Leader Predictions
There’s definitely some good value available in this market. Arozarena (+1500) and Edman (+1500) are both interesting options. I like Edman who went from 30 SBs in 2021 to 32 SBs in 2022 in six less games.
Edman could easily steal 40+ bases this season and could lead the Majors.
Mateo (+4000) offers a lot of value as well. He stole 35 bases in 150 games last season. The problem is he isn’t a great hitter and he may not come close to playing 150 games this season.
Ruiz is also in a great spot in Oakland, as he’ll be an everyday MLB starter for the first time. Ruiz will need to adjust to MLB pitching and find a way to get on base consistently, though.
If Ruiz succeeds in getting on base, he’ll have the green light to steal bases.
I’m betting on Ruiz (+700) and Edman (+1500) to steal the most bases during the 2023 MLB regular season. It’s going to be an interesting season on the base paths with bigger bases.
Best Bet: Ruiz (+700) and Edman (+1500)
