It was hoped that when the New York Islanders hired head coach Barry Trotz, fresh off a Stanley Cup title with the Washington Capitals, that he could deliver results rather quickly.
At this moment he’s got his team atop the East Division in this topsy-turvy NHL season, and there is a lot of competition to contend with.

On Tuesday night the Islanders will play host to the Boston Bruins at the Nassau Coliseum. Boston is still the favorite to win the East, as it is posted at America’s Bookie.
We’re going to follow a trend here that’s an 83% winner. Let’s cash a ticket.
Boston Bruins at New York Islanders Picks
When: 7 PM ET (Tuesday)
Money Line: Bruins -115 / Islanders -105
Puck Line: Bruins -1.5 Goals +230 / Islanders +1.5 Goals -270
Total: Under 5.5 Goals -140 / Over 5.5 Goals +120
The Islanders are now in the #1 spot in the East, at 15-6-4 (34points), after a five-game winning streak. The Bruins, who have lost six of their last nine, are the third place team, five points behind the Isles at 13-6-3.
These clubs have met three times this season, and the Islanders have swept all three. The first one came in the early days of the campaign, when the Bruins had a lot of trouble scoring and lost 1-0. Then came victories by scores of 4-2 and 7-2. So perhaps there’s a little “payback” on the minds of Boston.
The problem is that it’s been extremely difficult for any opponent to gain headway at the Nassau Coliseum, where the Islanders sport a 10-0-2 record, with losses in overtime and by shootout. In other words, Trotz’s team has not been beaten at home in regulation time.
And they have outscored their opponents by a 46-23 margin in Uniondale. That includes a heavy 20-8 advantage in the third period.
Semyon Varlamov once again gets the call in goal for the Isles. He started out the season like a house afire, with two shutouts, and he hasn’t slowed down a lot, chalking up a 2.10 goals-against average with a .926 save percentage. He’s allowed more than three goals only twice and has registered all three wins over Boston.
Tuukka Rask is a little banged up, so Jaroslav Halak will be in the pipes for the Bruins. He’s got fine numbers (2.24 GAA, .913 save percentage) and went 4-0-1 in his first five starts. But he got lit up by the Islanders on February 25, allowing seven goals. So he’s looking for redemption.
But there is a hot goal-scorer on the New York side; Anders Lee has tallied eight goals in his last 12 games. And we are not at the point where we want to buck the Islanders’ trend at home – their original home, we might point out, and not the one that was created for them at the Barclays Center.
There are obviously a couple of options here. You could go to the straight money line, where you get a price of -105. But there is also the “regulation time” prop, which affords you a payout at +163. That has lost just twice (in the three-way situation) in 12 games.
The Play: ISLANDERS +163 (Regulation Time Only)
