Reds, amid rocky times and rumored trades, look to escape Colorado with series win

The Cincinnati Reds made a promising move for the future by signing star right-hander Chase Burns to a seven-year, $105 million contract extension on Saturday.

Unfortunately for the Reds, Burns’ signing does little to fix the team’s current predicament.

Cincinnati faces the Colorado Rockies in the rubber match of a three-game series on Sunday in Denver, now sitting seven games back from the final National League wild-card spot.

TJ Rumfield went 4-for-5 with a two-run homer and four RBIs to help the Rockies even the series with a 10-3 win on Saturday.

Jake McCarthy and Mickey Moniak each had two hits and two RBIs for Colorado, which snapped a three-game losing skid. Cole Carrigg added two hits with an RBI and three runs scored.

Cincinnati’s lone bright spot was the play of catcher Jose Trevino, who had three hits, including a pair of solo homers.

The Reds have lost three of their last four games and reportedly are “focusing their efforts on moving players with expiring contracts,” ahead of the trade deadline on Aug. 3, The Athletic reported Saturday.

“That’s part of the business,” Cincinnati designated hitter Eugenio Suarez said. “You’ve just got to be professional, prepare for anything. If you stay, you stay. Part of the business.”

The pitching matchup for the series finale features a pair of right-handers as Cincinnati’s Hunter Greene (1-1, 6.97 ERA) faces Colorado’s Ryan Feltner (3-3, 4.55).

Greene, 26, struck out 12 batters over seven scoreless innings in a 4-0 home win over the Chicago Cubs last Friday.

He was making his second start of the season after having arthroscopic surgery on March 11 to remove bone chips from his right elbow.

“There’s nobody on this planet that’s better than Hunter Greene when he’s at his best,” Reds closer Emilio Pagan said. “There’s guys that are maybe as good as him, but when he’s going, he’s in a groove, his stuff, his command, his competitiveness, he’s up there with the best on the planet. It’s a real joy to watch him pitch.”

Greene is 2-1 with a 6.20 ERA in four career starts versus Colorado.

The Rockies will counter with Feltner, who allowed four runs and matched his season high with four walks over 4 1/3 innings in an 8-2 road loss to the San Francisco Giants on July 9.

“He looked like he didn’t have much feel for the ball early on,” Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer said. “Early on, the command was shaky. But he reeled it in a little bit, battled through it and kind of held them at bay for a while.”

Feltner, 29, is 3-1 with a 4.14 ERA in eight home starts this season, compared to 0-2 with a 5.32 ERA in five starts away from Coors Field.

He is 0-2 with a 7.15 ERA in two career starts versus Cincinnati.

The Rockies (40-60) are three wins from matching their win total of last season (43-119), and Schaeffer said his team is trending in the right direction.

“It’s been a gradual climb the entire year,” Schaeffer said. “These guys know where they’re at and they want to get better. This is a team that wants to get better together and they commit to a plan every night. You’re seeing the result.”
