Cavaliers Aim to Rebound Against Struggling 76ers
The Cleveland Cavaliers will look to bounce back from a tough 109-108 loss to the Houston Rockets when they visit the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday. While Cleveland is still near the top of the Eastern Conference, Philadelphia is in free fall, having lost seven straight games while battling injuries and defensive struggles.

Cavaliers Looking to Move Past Heartbreaking Loss
Cleveland (36-7) has been one of the NBA’s best teams this season, but their recent 3-3 stretch has raised some concerns. Their latest defeat, a one-point loss to Houston on Wednesday, was especially frustrating:
- Cleveland erased a 17-point deficit and led by six late in the fourth quarter.
- A 19-0 run wasn’t enough, as Houston took the lead with seconds remaining.
- Darius Garland had a chance to win the game but missed two of three free throws with 2.1 seconds left.
- Donovan Mitchell missed a last-second 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Despite the loss, Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson was pleased with his team’s fight, especially considering they were without Evan Mobley (calf) for the third straight game.
“I love how we fought. I love our resiliency. I love our team,” Atkinson said. “Guys fought like crazy. It just didn’t go our way.”
Mitchell, who struggled with 7-of-21 shooting for 19 points, defended Garland after his missed free throws:
“He’s our best free-throw shooter. It happens. It’s life,” Mitchell said. “There are a lot of things we could’ve done better before those free throws.”
Cleveland will now try to regroup against a short-handed Philadelphia squad, though they will once again be without Mobley.
76ers in Free Fall Without Embiid
The Philadelphia 76ers (29-14) have been in a tailspin since Joel Embiid suffered a knee injury, leading to a seven-game losing streak. The defense has been the biggest issue:
- Philly has allowed at least 115 points in six of their last seven losses.
- Their 144-109 loss to Denver on Tuesday was their worst defensive performance of the season.
- The Nuggets shot an incredible 61.2% from the field and dominated the rebounding battle, 51-25.
Sixers coach Nick Nurse was visibly frustrated with his team’s defensive effort in Denver:
“Not communicating well enough, not being physical enough,” Nurse said. “Not very happy with our mental preparation of being ready to go at the start of the game.”
The only bright spot for Philadelphia has been Tyrese Maxey, who scored 28 points against Denver and continues to carry the offensive load in Embiid’s absence. Guerschon Yabusele also had a strong showing with 22 points off the bench.
However, Maxey acknowledged how difficult it’s been to win without their superstar:
“It’s hard to win in this league,” Maxey said. “It’s hard to not be healthy. It’s hard to not have all your guys. It’s hard to not have your best player.”
Philadelphia is hoping Embiid can return soon, and they do have seven of their next eight games at home. But in the meantime, the Sixers will need a much stronger defensive effort if they want to avoid an eighth straight loss.
Key Matchups to Watch
1. Donovan Mitchell vs. Tyrese Maxey
- Both guards are their team’s primary scorers.
- Mitchell will look to bounce back from a rough shooting night in Houston.
- Maxey needs to carry Philly’s offense in Embiid’s absence.
2. Jarrett Allen vs. 76ers’ Frontcourt
- Allen has been dominant on the boards, but the Cavs were out-rebounded 51-25 against Denver.
- Philly is badly missing Embiid’s presence in the paint, and they’ll need Paul Reed and Mo Bamba to step up.
3. Cavaliers’ Defense vs. Sixers’ Three-Point Shooting
- Cleveland is one of the NBA’s top defensive teams, while Philadelphia has struggled from beyond the arc.
- If the Sixers can’t hit outside shots, they’ll struggle to keep up with the Cavs’ firepower.
Can the 76ers End Their Losing Streak?
The Cavaliers are the clear favorites, but Philadelphia is desperate for a win. If they can tighten up defensively and get another big game from Maxey, they could make this competitive. However, if Cleveland locks down the perimeter and dominates the rebounding battle, they should get back in the win column.
With both teams looking to bounce back from tough losses, expect a hard-fought game at Wells Fargo Center on Friday night.
