The Canadiens Can Win If…

Montreal dropped to 31-27-6 after a 3-1 road loss to the Penguins. The Canadiens trailed throughout, allowing Pittsburgh to score first at 4:03 in the opening period. Montreal was the underdog on the puck line, and the total for the game was set at 6.5 goals, but the teams combined for just 4.

Christian Dvorak scored the Canadiens’ only goal, finding the net at 14:28 in the third period to cut the deficit to 2-1. However, the Penguins added an empty-net goal later in the period to seal the win.

Montreal’s offense struggled in their 3-1 loss to Pittsburgh, with Christian Dvorak netting the only goal, his first of the season. Juraj Slafkovsky picked up his 7th assist, while Emil Heineman added his first.

The Canadiens fired 26 shots on goal but were hampered by 20 giveaways. They were held scoreless until Dvorak’s goal at 14:28 in the third period.

Defensively, Montreal gave up the first two goals of the game, one at 15:57 in the first period and another at 18:40 in the second. They allowed a third on an empty net with 45 seconds left in the third. Sam Montembeault made 21 saves with a 91.3% save percentage, while the Canadiens’ defense recorded 4 takeaways and 28 hits.

  • Through their last three regular season contests, Montreal has a record of 1-2. This also includes going 3-0 ATS, and posting an over-under record of 1-2.
  • Through their last ten regular season contests, Montreal has a record of 6-4. Their record vs the puck line sits at 6-4 in these matchups, while posting a 5-5 over-under mark.

The Kraken Can Win If…

Seattle fell to 27-34-4 after a 2-0 loss to the Bruins. The Kraken entered the game as underdogs on the puck line, and the total was set at 6 goals, but the teams combined for just 2.

Both of Boston’s goals came in the first period, with the first at 16:37 and the second at 10:03. Seattle’s offense struggled, managing 23 shots but failing to score.

Seattle’s offense was shut out in their 2-0 loss to Boston, despite firing 23 shots on goal. The Kraken were unable to find the net, marking the first time this season they’ve been held scoreless.

Seattle struggled with giveaways, committing 19 in the game. They failed to score in all three periods, including the first, where Boston netted both of their goals.

Defensively, the Kraken gave up an early goal just 3:23 into the first period and another at the 10:03 mark, but they kept the Bruins off the board after that. Joey Daccord finished with 31 saves and a 93.9% save percentage. Seattle’s defense also recorded 18 hits and 4 takeaways.

  • Seattle has put together a record of 1-2 in their last three games (regular season). In these contests, the team went just 1-2 against the spread, while going 1-1-1 on the over-under.
  • Over their last ten regular season games, the Kraken have gone 4-6 straight up. Their record vs the puck line sits at 4-6 in these matchups, while posting a 4-5-1 over-under mark.

The Lean

For a moneyline pick, I’m taking the Kraken to pick up on a win over the Canadiens at home. With the moneyline sitting at -146, I’ll be locking in a bet on the Kraken straight-up.

When it comes to my suggested pick for the puck line, I’d advise taking the Canadiens to cover. Even in the event of a Kraken victory, this matchup is likely to remain closely contested, and the Canadiens should cover the puck line.

If you’re looking at the over/under line set at 6 goals, our prediction is that this game will exceed that mark, and we strongly advise placing a bet on the over.

Seattle Adjusts to Roster Changes as They Face Montreal

For Seattle Kraken fans, the team will have a noticeably different feel when they take the ice at Climate Pledge Arena on Wednesday night against the Montreal Canadiens.

Missing from the lineup will be Yanni Gourde and Brandon Tanev, two high-energy forwards who were traded away at last week’s NHL deadline. Both players were with the Kraken since the franchise’s 2021 expansion draft and were fan favorites for their work ethic and intensity.

Kraken Adjusting After Trade Deadline Deals

Gourde and Oliver Bjorkstrand, Seattle’s lone NHL All-Star this season, were sent to the Tampa Bay Lightning last Wednesday, while Tanev was traded to the Winnipeg Jets on Friday.

“The things they did for this organization, on and off the ice, were tremendous,” Kraken general manager Ron Francis said. “We can’t thank them (enough). … They really represented the Kraken well. We wish them nothing but the best moving forward. It’s just unfortunately become part of the business.”

With Seattle sitting seventh in the Western Conference wild-card race and 12 points out of a playoff spot, the Kraken became sellers at the deadline, opting to get younger and focus on development for the future.

Head coach Dan Bylsma emphasized that Seattle’s depth will be tested, and he expects other players to step up in the absence of the traded veterans.

“With the absence of those (traded) guys, bigger and more prominent roles will be asked of all the group,” Bylsma said.

The Kraken return home after a 1-2-0 road trip, which ended in a 4-2 loss to the Washington Capitals on Sunday. Shane Wright and Jordan Eberle scored in the game, while Joey Daccord made 20 saves.

Eberle, now wearing the captain’s “C” after Gourde’s departure, acknowledged the team played well but fell short.

“It stings,” said Eberle. “I think we played well enough to at least come away with a point, get it to OT. I liked the compete. I liked the battle. But ultimately, that’s a good team, and you want to come out ahead.”

Canadiens Looking to Stay Hot in Playoff Race

Unlike Seattle, Montreal remains in the hunt for a playoff spot and is coming off a 4-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night.

Juraj Slafkovsky had a goal and two assists in the win, while goaltender Sam Montembeault made 29 saves.

The Canadiens have now won six of their past eight games (6-1-1) and sit just two points behind Columbus for the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Montreal’s Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield each tallied a goal and an assist against Vancouver. Suzuki leads the Canadiens with 67 points (20 goals, 47 assists), while Caufield has a team-high 32 goals.

Unlike Seattle, Montreal chose not to sell at the trade deadline, deciding to keep their roster intact for a potential playoff push.

“The plan from the beginning of the season was that what we did at the trade deadline would be dictated by the team,” Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes said. “Heading into the 4 Nations break, we were on a down, so we thought we’d probably do the same thing as in years past and trade away our players.

“Then, credit to the players and coaches, they won five in a row and turned things around.”

Matchup Outlook: Can Seattle Adjust to Life Without Gourde and Tanev?

With two key players gone, Seattle will need to find new sources of energy in their forward group. Meanwhile, Montreal is playing with confidence and looking to capitalize on their recent momentum.

Seattle still boasts a strong goaltending duo and a deep, balanced team, but adjusting to the loss of their emotional leaders will be a key storyline in this matchup.
