Charlotte FC Looks to Break Scoring Drought Against Atlanta United

Charlotte FC has been solid at keeping opponents from scoring, but their own goal-scoring issues are becoming a significant problem in MLS.

Defensive Strength and Offensive Challenges

With a record of 6-6-4 and 22 points, Charlotte entered the weekend having allowed only 16 goals in 16 matches, tied for the second-fewest conceded in MLS. They recorded five consecutive shutouts before their streak ended with a 3-1 loss to the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday. They lead the league with seven clean sheets.

However, Charlotte’s offensive struggles continue. With only 15 goals scored, they are tied for second fewest in the league. Their goal against New York was their only score in the past three matches, resulting in a 0-1-2 record over that stretch.

Building on Recent Performance

As they prepare to face Atlanta United (4-7-4, 16 points) on Sunday, Charlotte aims to build on the goal and scoring opportunities created against New York.

“For us, it’s about putting the last one right and going on another run like we had recently,” Charlotte captain Ashley Westwood said. “It’s a little bump in the road. We’ve been there before. It’s time to put another run together.”

Patrick Agyemang leads the team with three goals, though he has not scored in four matches. Kerwin Vargas and Westwood have each scored twice, while no other player on the team has more than one goal.

Agyemang’s availability is uncertain after he turned his ankle against the Red Bulls.

“It’s going to be tough for him to feature, but we’ll see how it goes,” coach Dean Smith said. “Hopefully, (the trainers) can get him on the pitch.”

Atlanta United’s Recent Form

Atlanta United comes into the match buoyed by a midweek 3-1 victory against league-leading Inter Miami.

“Stay grounded, and not go too high,” Atlanta midfielder Tristan Muyumba said. “Of course, we had a good game on Wednesday, but the best way to be consistent is to win the next game.”

Home Performance Concerns for Atlanta United

To secure a win, Atlanta must improve their home performance in MLS. Despite a 3-4-1 home record, they have lost four consecutive home matches and are winless in their last five home games (0-4-1). Their last home win was on March 31.

“Massively important, because we have not won at home in a while,” coach Gonzalo Pineda said.

Saba Lobjanidze, who doubled his season goal tally with a brace against Miami, now ranks second on the team with four goals.

As Charlotte FC looks to overcome their scoring drought and Atlanta United seeks to solidify their home advantage, this MLS clash promises to be a pivotal match for both teams.
