Cade Cowell adds width and direct running from the opposite side. He has recorded five assists and ranks among the league leaders in open-play crosses. That gives New York multiple ways to attack. They can press high, create turnovers near the box or move the ball wide and deliver service toward Hall.
The Red Bulls have not controlled possession consistently, averaging around 47 percent across their last 10 league matches. That is not necessarily a weakness within their system. They are comfortable allowing opponents to have sterile possession before accelerating after a turnover.
New York have averaged two goals per game across their last 10 league matches. The downside is that they have also conceded 2.1 per game during that sample, allowing almost 14 shots per match. Their attack has covered several defensive problems, but that approach can become unreliable when the finishing cools.
The official availability report lists goalkeeper A.J. Marcucci as out with a knee injury. Rafael Mosquera is questionable because of a thigh issue. Neither absence should force a major tactical change, although Mosquera would reduce the available attacking depth if he cannot play.
Philadelphia Union Betting Form
Philadelphia entered the break with one win, four draws and 10 losses. The Union have scored 18 times while conceding 30, leaving them with the weakest points total in MLS. Their last league appearance was a chaotic 6-4 defeat at Inter Miami.
There were some encouraging attacking signs in that loss. Milan Iloski scored three times, Bruno Damiani added another goal, and Philadelphia placed 10 shots on target despite finishing with only 36 percent possession. Scoring four times away from home should provide something to build on, even if the defensive performance was impossible to overlook.
Iloski leads the Union with seven league goals. His movement around Damiani gives Philadelphia two central threats, and Richter is expected to continue using a two-forward shape. Damiani can occupy the center backs while Iloski drifts into open areas and attacks second balls.
Philadelphia have averaged 15.8 shots and 4.8 attempts on target across their last 10 league matches. Those numbers suggest their attack has been more competitive than the standings indicate. The issue is efficiency at both ends. The Union have averaged 1.5 goals during that run while allowing 2.1.
Wagner’s return should improve the entire left side. He remains Philadelphia’s all-time assists leader and provides high-quality service from open play and set pieces. His ability to advance the ball also gives the Union another route around New York’s press.
Sullivan’s possible return is another positive development, although his workload may be limited after such a long absence. Expecting him to immediately transform the midfield would be aggressive. Even 20 or 30 minutes could give Philadelphia more creativity late in the match.
The availability information is slightly unclear. New York’s official status report lists no Philadelphia injuries, while the Union have stated that Olwethu Makhanya is away for personal reasons. The rest of the Philadelphia group is expected to be available.
The betting market appears to be placing significant weight on the coaching change, Wagner’s return and Philadelphia’s home-field advantage. Perhaps that adjustment is understandable. Pricing a one-win team around -147, however, asks bettors to believe the reset will produce an immediate and dramatic improvement.

Philadelphia should have opportunities against the Red Bulls’ defense. Iloski and Damiani can punish defensive mistakes if Philadelphia move the ball into the final third quickly.
