San Marino has not won any of its three 2026 friendlies, but the performances have been more competitive than the usual results associated with this team. San Marino used a 4-3-2-1 against Bangladesh, with Nicola Nanni leading the attack and Nicolas Giacopetti operating underneath him. Giacopetti scored the equalizer and now has three goals across his last four international appearances. The problem was what happened behind the attack. Bangladesh created several clear openings from direct passes, wide deliveries and runs between poorly aligned defenders.
San Marino’s final 24-player group includes several younger options, while Filippo Berardi is absent after starting against Bangladesh. Marcello Mularoni provides experience in midfield, but Cevoli may again give minutes to Cristian Meloni, Gabriel Capicchioni and other developing players. That introduces more second-half uncertainty than bettors would normally want when backing a large underdog.
The travel situation is not ideal either. San Marino played in Serravalle on Friday before traveling to Hungary and arriving during the night ahead of Monday’s final training session. Defending without the ball for long stretches could make that shorter recovery period more significant late in the match. Still, San Marino +2.5 has some appeal because the current team has shown it can remain organized against opponents closer to Azerbaijan’s level.

Azerbaijan’s 2-0 defeat to Malta changed the tone around this matchup. Aykhan Abbasov’s team played most of that friendly on the front foot and produced early pressure through Mahir Emreli and Toral Bayramov, but the final pass and finishing were poor. Khayal Aliyev will not be involved after leaving camp for treatment on an injury suffered against Malta.
