On Saturday, May 3, Canelo Alvarez steps back inside the boxing ring to defend his undisputed super middleweight championship against William Scull live on PPV from the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) is making his first appearance in a fight outside of North America after signing a four-fight deal with Riyadh Season. This massive agreement reshaped the sport of boxing and solidified Saudi Arabia as the king of boxing outside of Las Vegas.
Scull (23-0, 9 KOs) was Alvarez’s mandatory challenger last year, but the two men took on different opponents instead of fighting each other. Now, Scull will get the biggest fight of his career.
The Canelo vs. Scull fight has an expected ringwalk time of 11pm ET, 8pm PT. The PPV has a five-fight undercard and can be seen live on DAZN.

Canelo Alvarez Recent Fights
Canelo Alvarez has steamrolled his competition over the last five fights of his illustrious career, since losing via unanimous decision to Dimitrii Bivol.
Following the Bivol loss, Alvarez competed against Gennadiy Golovkin for their trilogy fight (Sep. 2022). Canelo won via unanimous decision and was clearly the better fighter that night, unlike in the previous two bouts. GGG had to come up in weight for this bout, which was also unlike their first two fights.
Following the GGG trilogy, Canelo dominated John Ryder in May 2023, as he won via unanimous decision with the following scores: 120-107, 118-109, 118-109.
In September 2023, Canelo Alvarez cruised to another easy unanimous decision win over Jermell Charlo. The judges scored the fight in favor of Alvarez: 118-109, 118-109, 119-108.
In May 2024, Jamie Munguia became the next man up to get beat down. However, the judges were not as convinced in the scores. Although Canelo still won via unanimous decision, the scores were closer than the previous three bouts: 117-110, 116-111, 115-112.
Alvarez’s most recent fight took place last September, when he took on Edgar Berlanga. But, keeping with the theme of his last two years, Canelo trucked through Berlanga on his way to another unanimous decision with the scores of 118-109, 118-109, 117-110.
Now, we get another opponent who is not on the same level as Alvarez. This should be more of a tune-up fight for his next bout this year, which should come in September. Keep reading below to see who that will be against.
Canelo Alvarez Odds
Alvarez opened at -3000 odds against Scull and has seen his fight line balloon as high as -5500. This is the biggest his odds have been since taking on Avni Yildirim in February 2021. Over the last eight years, Canelo has been the betting favorite except for his first fight against GGG in 2017.
William Scull Recent Fights
William Scull is an unbeaten fighter who is facing the toughest opponent of his career to date. In fact, it’s hard to imagine that he will ever face anyone better than Canelo. Like Alvarez, Scull also comes into this weekend’s bout having gone the distance in at least five consecutive fights.
Scull last fought in October 2024, where he beat an undefeated Vladimir Shishkin via unanimous decision in Germany. Prior to that, he beat Sean Hemphill in May 2024, Cristian Fabian Rios in October 2023, Abel Nicolas Adriel in November 2022, and Evgeny Shvedenko in July 2022.
It should be noted that the three fights prior to Shishkin were six to eight round bouts. So, as you can see, his step up in competition is a rather dramatic one. It also makes you wonder how he could become a mandatory challenger for any of the sanctioning bodies when he has yet to face any reputable fighter.
Another note on the challenger, is that Conor Benn apparently made Scull quit during a sparring session as both men were training for their respective bouts in Saudi Arabia. Benn dropped a thrilling fight to Eubank Jr. via decision on April 26.
Will we get a “Rocky” moment in this clash where Scull fights up to the level up his opponent?
William Scull Odds
We have very limited betting data on Scull. From what we can see, he’s been an underdog in his last two fights. Shishkin opened as a -200 favorite before dropping that bout. As for the Canelo fight, Scull opened at +1300 odds and currently sits in a range of +1200 to +1600 odds.
Canelo Alvarez vs. William Scull Predictions
You have to give Alvarez credit; he’s trying his best to sell that Scull is going to be a tough opponent on Saturday:
“He’s a world champion and I want to be undisputed champion again, two-time undisputed champion. He has that Cuban school. It’s very complicated. He knows how to use the ring, he has a very good jab, he has qualities.”
This fight really comes down to how much the cat (Canelo) wants to his play with his food. Scull has some boxing skills, but they’re not even close to the level of Alvarez.
Eventually, I see Alvarez doing what he does best: getting inside and pummeling the body of his opponent before finishing off Scull.
Bet: Canelo Alvarez (-4000)
Canelo Alvarez vs. William Scull Prop Bets
The following Canelo Alvarez vs. William Scull prop bets are courtesy of BetUS:
Over/Under 9.5 rounds
- Over 9.5 (-120)
- Under 9.5 (-110)
Although Alvarez has gone the distance in his last five fights, and Scull has never been stopped before, it’s really hard to imagine that the challenger can win this fight. In fact, I have a hard time seeing this go into the championship rounds.
Bet: Under 9.5 (-110)
Will Fight go the distance?
- Yes (+150)
- No (-200)
The only way this fight goes the distance is if Canelo wants the ring time to get in a sparring session. The difference in skills between these two fighters is as wide and vast as the Pacific Ocean.
Alvarez really should make a statement in this bout and finish off his opponent as he sends a message to his September challenger.
Bet: No (-200)
Method of Victory
- Scull via TKO/KO/DQ (+2800)
- Scull via decision (+4000)
- Canelo via TKO/KO/DQ (-200)
- Canelo via decision (+150)
- Draw (+2800)
As you can see from above, I think Canelo stops Scull. It would be silly to think that Alvarez allows an inferior opponent to last the full 12 rounds.
Bet: Canelo via TKO/KO/DQ (-200)
Betting on Rounds
- Either Winner in rounds 1-4 (+850)
- Either Winner in rounds 5-8 (+250)
- Either Winner in rounds 9-12 (+210)
- Fight To Go The Distance (+150)
I picked the Under 9.5 rounds in the O/U prop bet above. So, a great way to hedge our bets would be to take the option of either winner in rounds 9-12.
I have a hard time seeing Scull making it into the championship rounds. I think Alvarez will eventually put him away before the 10th round.
Bet: Either Winner in rounds 9-12 (+210)
What’s Next For The Alvarez vs. Scull Winner?
The biggest excitement about this fight is that once it’s over, we can all turn our attention towards the mega-fight in September as Canelo takes on Terence Crawford.
Now, this fight is supposed to take place on Sep. 13, in Las Vegas. So, Canelo will return to Riyadh next year for two bouts with one left on his four-fight deal.
Canelo has already opened as a -230 to -235 betting favorite against Crawford who is a +180 to +185 underdog. That’s a sizable difference considering Crawford (41-0, 31KOs) is one of the pound-for-pound best boxers in the world.
