On Friday, May 2, Ryan Garcia returns to boxing action in a fight against Rolly Romero live on DAZN PPV the Times Square in New York City, New York.
Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) was recently cleared from suspension after failing a drug test last year following a victory over Devin Haney, who is also on this PPV card. The result was overturned to a no-contest due to the failed drug test. Additionally, Garcia also missed weight for that bout.
Romero (16-2, 13 KOs) last fought in September, where he beat Manuel Jaimes. It was a bounce-back win after he lost to Isaac Cruz last March.
In addition to Haney’s fight, Teofimo Lopez Jr. will also be on the card in a WBO super lightweight title fight against Arnold Barboza Jr. The DAZN PPV is set to begin at 6pm ET, with the Garcia vs. Romero ringwalk set to begin at 11pm ET. If you are wondering why this event is taking place on a Friday, it’s due to Canelo Alvarez fighting on Saturday versus William Scull.

Ryan Garcia Recent Fights
As mentioned, Garcia last fought in April 2024, and defeated Devin Haney in a thriller. Unfortunately for Garcia, the result was ruled a no contest after he failed a drug test. Furthermore, he was ineligible to compete for the title as he came in overweight.
Prior to that bout, Garcia had defeated Oscar Duarte Jurado in December 2023. It was his first fight back after suffering the first loss of his pro career in April 2023.
Garcia sustained a 7th round KO to Gervonta Davis after being knocked down twice in the fight. Prior to the loss, he beat Javier Fortuna via 6th round KO in July 2022. He also scored a unanimous decision win over Emmanuel Tagoe in April 2022 and a 7th round TKO over Luke Campbell in January 2021.
Garcia made the following predictions about the upcoming fight versus Romero:
“You’re in big trouble now because I’m not doing the stuff when I was with Haney, and I beat him. So, that just show you where I’m at. You can see right now that I’m clean. So, I’m even more focused. I’m training every day. So, it’s going to be even worse. Like I said, you’re going to be retiring that night. I promise you. It’s going to be your last fight.”
Ryan Garcia Odds
Garcia opened as a -700 favorite and currently sits with odds ranging from -900 to -1000. It’s a big turnaround from being the underdog (+380-650) versus Haney in his last fight.
Garcia was also the underdog against Davis when he closed at +165 to +230 odds. The rest of his betting data shows that he was a sizable favorite in his other fights.
Rolly Romero Recent Fights
Rolly Romero has alternated between wins and losses in his last four fights. He suffered a defeat versus Gervonta Davis in May 2022, but then beat Ismael Barroso in Masuffered a defeat versus Gervonta Davis in May 2022, but then beat Ismael Barroso in May 2023, via 9th round TKO.
In March 2024, he suffered an 8th round TKO loss to Isaac Cruz. In September, he bounced back with a unanimous decision win over Manuel Jameis.
Despite being a sizable underdog, Romero is very confident in his chances this weekend:
“The best thing is, I know I’m gonna get the best Ryan Garcia on fight night. So, there ain’t no f–king excuses or anything. You know, sh*t, I’m the most confident fighter in the damn world, but I’m happy it’s finally happening, and over here in Times Square, New York. The biggest fight this year, for sure.”
Rolly Romero Odds
Romero opened as a +480 underdog versus Garcia, and currently sits at a range of +550 to +600. He was also an underdog against Isaac Cruz, but came in as the sizable favorite versus Manuel Jaimes. Romero’s betting data indicates a fighter that was the underdog versus superior talent, but the favorite against inferior opponents.
Ryan Garcia vs. Rolly Romero Predictions
Despite an Over/Under of 7.5 rounds, Oscar De La Hoya feels that this fight will end within four rounds:
“I think the power is going to make the difference here [against Rolly Romero], and the speed. The pop in his hands is incredible. It’s going to be a fun four-round fight. It’s going to be a high pace, and both guys can bang. I think the punches that are going to be flying inside that ring are going to make for a short night.”
In his fight against Davis, Romero was stopped in the 6th round. Last year, he was stopped in the 8th round against Isaac Cruz.
Garcia is slightly bigger and has a better overall skillset than Romero does. I believe that “King Ry” is going to make a statement in his return fight by crushing Romero inside the distance. The only question is when that TKO/KO will come.
Bet: Ryan Garcia (-1000)
Ryan Garcia vs. Rolly Romero Prop Bets
The following Ryan Garcia vs. Rolly Romero prop bets are courtesy of BetUS:
Over/Under 7.5 rounds
- Over 7.5 (-115)
- Under 7.5 (-115)
For Garcia, he needs to show the world that potential he used to flash before his issues outside of the ring suffocated his promising career.
This is a fighter that was considered a future superstar of the sport. Instead, he has two blemishes on his career and looking desperate to turn things around.
I believe he will stop Romero in Under 7.5 rounds just like Cruz and Davis did.
Bet: Under 7.5 (-115)
Will Fight go the distance?
- Yes (+450)
- No (-700)
If this fight goes the distance, it will be almost as bad as a loss for Garcia. With the future fight plans already tentatively agreed to, Garcia needs a strong showing. Romero a tune-up fighter, but can’t be outright dismissed. I see Garcia trying to finish off Romero early and often. Eventually, he will find the knockout.
Bet: No (-700)
Method of Victory
- Romero via TKO/KO/DQ (+900)
- Romero via decision (+2000)
- Garcia via TKO/KO/DQ (-450)
- Garcia via decision (+500)
- Draw (+2200)
As you can see from the prop bets above, I see Garcia picking up the 21st KO of his career after stopping Romero in the first half of this fight. “King Ry” can’t afford to mess around or risk anything
Bet: Garcia via TKO/KO/DQ (-450)
Betting on Rounds
- Either Winner in rounds 1-4 (+250)
- Either Winner in rounds 5-8 (+150)
- Either Winner in rounds 9-12 (+335)
- Fight To Go The Distance (+450)
This prop bet offers a decent opportunity to hedge our bets. We took the Under in the prop above, so let’s go with the option for either fighter to win in rounds 9-12. That covers just about everything except Round 8.
Bet: Either Winner in rounds 9-12 (+335)
What’s Next For The Garcia vs. Romero Winner?
As I alluded to above, the plan is for Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney to fight in a rematch this fall. Haney wants to avenge last year’s “loss,” while Garcia wants redemption and to prove that his fight last year wasn’t due to a failed test or luck. Either way, this will be an exciting rematch that will shape the division moving forward.
I think the Garcia vs. Haney winner could run through the welterweight division and unify the belts if they truly turn their attention towards that goal.
